RSS#13 (ስሞች/ שְׁמוֹת)

Greetings in the name of His & Her Imperial Majesties Qedamawi Haile Sellassie I & Itege Menen Asfaw,

Greetings, yet again to one and all, from “Lidj Yefdi” (pronounced Lij; Yêf-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So, with this Hebrew Shabbat(or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, nonetheless studied the Torah portion of Shemot – שְׁמוֹת, on the 20th – כ, & the 21st – כא, of the month of Teb(v)et – טֵבֵתin the year of 5780. (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the MoonFrom an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2012/7512 these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known, also as; S’moch – ስሞች; on the 8th – ፰, & on the 9th – ፱, of the month of Taḥ’sas- ታኅሣሥ.  The Ethiopic calendar is solar(with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet-ሰንበትin the Ethiopian language of Amharic, which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez-(ግእዝ).

As we move out of the first book of the Torah/Orit, we go into the second book, which is Exodus.

Now, the children of Israel had come into Egypt under Joseph, & buried Jacob(Israel) in the land of Canaan.  Wherefore, the children of Israel grew exceedingly in Egypt.  But, as time past there came a Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, & sought to dealt wisely with the Hebrews, for there was worry of the great numbers the children of Israel grew to.  But, taking matters further, the Pharaoh that did not know Joseph, found it beneficial to serve the Hebrews with work of rigor.

Even, taking matters to another step, there was a decree made by Pharaoh, to have any male child of the children of Israel slain.  This charge was given to two Hebrew midwivesShiphrah & Puah.

These two Hebrew women, did not follow the orders the Pharaoh, for they feared the judgement of God, more than he.  So, Israel continued to grow in number.  Pharaoh determined, charged his people to take matters more seriously.  In the midst of this, out of the house of Levi, was born a male-child, at three months was sent up a river, in attempt to save his life, by his mother.

This child was found at the hand of the daughter of the Pharaoh, whom knew of the decree for the Hebrew male children, & noticed the this child was one of the them, wrapped the clothing of their arrangements, and a small ark of bulrushes.  The daughter of the Pharaoh, took him and had him nursed by the Hebrew woman, who sent him up the river.

The child grew in favor of the Egyptians, but things began to change in his life, as he learned more about himself.  The child had been named Moses by the daughter of the Pharaoh, for she drew him from the waters.  He went out one day, among the Hebrews & saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, enraged by the burdens which the children of Israel had to endure, he in sudden moment slew the Egyptian & hid him in the sand.  Days past, & then Moses saw two Hebrew at each others throats, in argument, Moses intervened & tried to find common ground between the two.

But, one who clearly had been found at fault the argument, confronted Moses, and rejected him for he knew of Moses interaction between the Hebrew & the Egyptian he had slain, in secret.  Moses, for fear, fled to Midian, where he would later meet Reu’el(Jethro); a man who raised seven daughters.  The seven daughters, were whom Moses would meet first, for they came to a well to draw water for the flocks they attended for their father.  The seven daughters of Reu’el(Jethro), were being harassed by some other shepherds & Moses again, intervened driving them away, along with helping them water their flocks.

The daughters came to tell their father of what happened to the mat the well, & they described Moses as an Egyptian, for he still carried a few things which he left with, but Reu’el, knew that of the times, it would be odd for an Egyptian to help a Midianite.  Reu’el(Jethro), invited Moses to stay a while in Midian.  Before long Moses felt love one Reu’el’s  daughters & her name was Ts’ipporah – ሲፓራ / צִּפּוֹרָה.

They were married and had a son, whom they named Gershom – ጌርሳም / גֵּרְשׁוֹם.

The cry of the children of Israel became great, so great they even sought a deliverer, from prophecies.  Moses, now attended the flocks of Reu’el(Jethro), but the voice of God was about to call upon him.

Moses, then took his family into Egypt, & reunited with his original family, in which his brother Aaron, became his priest.

Moses, then is confronted with the disbelief of the children of Israel. & thus began the exchange, between Moses & Pharaoh; exchanges which would be for the release of the Hebrew people from Egypt.

The last portion of study shows Judah, pleading on the behalf of his younger brother, Benjamin.  Judah explained to Joseph, the affinity that Jacob(Israel) had to Benjamin.  He continued to elaborate on those reasons showing that it was because of Joseph’s supposed disappearance that Jacob(Israel) was very “overprotective” (so, to speak) and cautious of Benjamin’s well-being.  Joseph, cunningly made arrangements of his own, to have his family in the land of Canaan, to come to Egypt.  For Joseph knew not at first, if his father Jacob(Israel), was even alive or not; but upon speaking with his brother & going unnoticed by him (& the other nine[9] as well), he knew that he was now, alive & well of old age.

But, going on in speech with his brother Judah, Joseph couldn’t hold back his emotion at hearing about the plight of his kindred during the famine.  Joseph, then revealed who he really was, wept and embraced his brothers.  Forgiving them, for their past encounters, & revealing to them how their families, flocks and possessions would now find a home in Egypt, for the famine so great.  So Joseph, pleaded with Pharaoh to allow his kindred to relocate.

Jacob(Israel) Goes Into Egypt

Jacob(Israel) upon hearing that his son Joseph, was indeed alive, with his youngest son, Benjamin.  He rejoiced, but was reluctant to venture into Egypt to dwell.  But, God came to him in a vision and gave him the encouragement to see his son, & that his posterity in the covenant that Israel had with God; from Abraham & Isaac would be preserved.  So, the Hebrews ventured into Egypt by the workings of Joseph, and the blessing of Pharaoh. (But, more definitively by the hands of God.)

Joseph, gathered his family and his kindred into the land of Goshen, for they had flocks, cattle and he coached them into telling Pharaoh that they were shepherds.

Joseph, managed the house of Pharaoh in Egypt well for he was a governor & because of the famine many came to buy food from Joseph.  He stored the grains and seeds of the land in plenty, & many came to barter to feed themselves and their families, in exchange for others things.

In continuation of our study of the Scriptures, we come to the parsha of Miketz, Ethiopically known as BeKHwalam (Kehulet Amet BeKHwalam.)

The last portion ended with Joseph, the son of Jacob(Israel), being sold by his own brothers, & through trials of times, Joseph found himself in Egypt.  As a prisoner in Egypt, he is still blessed by God grace.

Joseph, now in the company of other prisoners, (ie. the chief baker, and butler), interprets visions they’ve had.  The news of the gift that Joseph has, reaches the ears of the Pharaoh, & Pharaoh, inquires of Joseph assistance for a vision he cannot make sense of.

Pharaoh, summoned all of the magicians, of Egypt to interpret the dream troubling dreams he had been having.  But, surely, there was none of them who could interpret the dreams for him.  So, upon hearing about an Hebrew, in the dungeon, who seemingly interpreted dreams in accuracy, of other prisoners and others, Pharaoh, called for Joseph’s release; for he wished to see if Joseph could give an interpretation of his dreams.

Joseph, then was set in high regard to Pharaoh, by his command because he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream with such great understanding.  Pharoah called Joseph, Tz’aphnat Paneah’kh – צָפְנַת פַּעְנֵחַ, & he was given Asnath – אָסְנַת, the daughter of Potipherah, the priest of OnAsnath, bore Joseph, two sons, which he called Manasseh & Ephraim.  Because of Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream, many nations came to Egypt to buy food, for Joseph had stored for the years of famine that was great upon the land.  Jacob(Israel) sent his sons, all but the youngest, Benjamin, for he feared that something may happen equivalent to Joseph’s disappearance.

The sons of Israel, went into Egypt to buy things like grain, for the famine had left them with very little.  Joseph, saw his brethren, but they were unable to notice him for he was dressed in the apparel of Egyptian nobility.  There he confronted them as if, he were dealing with spies & commanded that they send their youngest brother along with them for Joseph had not seen Benjamin, with the others.  The brothers returned and told Jacob(Israel) what happened while they were in Egypt.  Judah, one of the brethren spoke firmly with Joseph, and their father Jacob(Israel), in the matter of their youngest brother, Benjamin.

Upon the return of all his brothers, with their youngest brother, Benjamin; Joseph made haste to see all of them together again.  Joseph, appealed to Pharaoh to bring his family to Egypt, for the famine was so great & he wished not to see his family struggle in the land of Canaan; Pharaoh permitted the Hebrews to enter in, on Joseph’s behalf.

This kifil(portion) of the study of the Scriptures, deals with the stories of the lives of the B’nei Ysrael(or the sons of Israel-Jacob).

…each of them having a particular situation they had to deal with, in specific intervals of time, in their lives…

For instance, from the past parsha/kifil(portion), of W(V)ayishlaKH’-Lake’, Simeon & Levi, Jacob-Israel‘s sons by Leah, slew the Shechemites for the rape of their sister, Dinah.

Reuben, later violated his father, and his wife Bilhah, by sleeping with her in the depth of the night, while she thought that it was her husband. (so the firstborn, not only violated his father, but his birthright as well)

Benjamin, the youngest, is born of Jacob-Israel‘s wife, Rachel, but his birth goes “hand-in-hand” with Rachel‘s passing. (leaving him as the “baby of the family” & attracting much of Jacob‘s attention)

Now, in this portion of the study, Jacob-Israel settled in the land of Canaan.  While in Canaan, Joseph, Jacob-Israel‘s elder son of Rachel, is adorned by his father with a beautiful coat with an array of colors and designs.  The love, Joseph received from his father evoked the jealousy of his brothers, & the ability to tune into the dreams and visions, which God continued to send him, did no better for Joseph, pertaining to his brother’s envy.

Joseph‘s brothers were in Shechem feeding their flocks, & Jacob sent Joseph, to join them.  But, because of their envy, Joseph’s brothers sought an opportunity and plotted against him(Joseph), to the point that they considered killing him.

But, because the other sons of Jacob-Israel, had not found their brother Joseph in the place where they left him, which was a pit with no water.  Then the other brother, made a story to tell their father that their brother was killed by a wild beast, for they wished not to tell Jacob-Israel, that they plotted rid themselves of their brother, for they were envious of him.

Now, in an interim, from the story of Joseph; his brother, Judah marries a Canaanite woman, whom was the daughter of Shua.  The daughter of Shua bore Judah, three sons: Er, Onan &, Shelah.  After the disobedience and deaths of the first two sons, Judah was left to care for his daughter-in-law, Tamar, whom had married his firstborn son, ErOnan, was to take on responsibility of being the caretaker, & his brother’s keeper, in the matters of his sister-in-law, Tamar, but he(Onan) rejected the responsibility; & provoked God to punish him.  So, Judah, as her(Tamar) father-in-law, proposed that she return to her family, & await until Shelah; Judah‘s youngest was to come of age, so that he may assume the position of being his brother’s keeper.

Shelah grew, but he was not given to Tamar, for a husband.  So, she plotted to make Judah acknowledge that he had wronged her, in that his arrangement, responsibility, & commitment to her as a father-in-law, had not been kept.

So, returning to Joseph‘s story; he ends up in Egypt, as a servant to Potiphar, a captain of the Egyptian guardJoseph, while in servitude, is blessed by God that even the Egyptians sense that there is something special about him.  Joseph finds himself in charge of the many things that someone of his status just hadn’t been able to attain.  But, of course, a challenge to his continued success was inevitable.  So, the wife of Potiphar, is enamored by Joseph, & continuously tried to persuade him to sleep with her: but, he resisted her, every time.  But, in one instance, Potiphar was on leave from his home leaving Joseph in charge of all that he had.  Potiphar, trusting Joseph, but Potiphar‘s wife, saw a chance to seize the opportunity to get Joseph all to herself.  Joseph, again refused her, but she forced herself upon him, to the point that he had to flee from her, leaving his garment in her hand.  She being ashamed & angered at Joseph, made false accusations, but turned the words in Potiphar‘s guards and Potiphar‘s ears so that Joseph, found himself in the prisons of Egypt, for betrayal, among other accusations.

But, while in prison, Joseph is still favored by God, for staying steadfast even in the midst of his adversity; he receives the responsibility that not many would’ve as a prisoner, interpreting dreams and visions, like the ones he had as a child in the land of Canaan.

Though, Esau came with many, Jacob was humble with only his family & those with them.  Also, though between them (Esau & Jacob) it was seemingly “bad blood” with their recent history, they were both able to reconcile with one another.

Esau, then even invited Jacob to live in Seir(Edom), but Jacob chose to settle in Sukkot, near Shalem*.  Nearby, Jacob erected an altar, to the name of the God that blessed him, continuously.

Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob, by Leah, then went out among the people of the land, & there was a Hivite, named Shechem, the son of Hamor, a prince of the country, took her in no formal way of courtship, but later spoke to the ideals of love for her, in which Dinah never objected too.  Shechem spoke to his father to make arrangements to marry Dinah, but Jacob had heard of his daughter’s encounter with the Hivite prince, along with all of Jacob‘s sons.  Hamor, sought to make peace between the Hivites and the Jacobites (Israelites), with marriages between the people, with the initiate being the union of Shechem & Dinah.  But, Jacob‘s sons saw the actions of the Hivite prince to be morally a crime, against them.

The sons of Jacob, answered deceitfully, with the intent to punish the Hivites for morally wicked actions done to their sister.  The sons of Jacob, made prerequisites pending the negotiations that the Jacobites would marry into the families of the HivitesShechem, and Hamor made haste that they and all the males of them should comply with the requests of the sons of Jacob, to gain not only the peaceable marriage to their daughters, but giving the daughters of the Hivites to the sons of Jacob to marry.  Thus, gaining their consent to dwell together with them.  For Jacob, blessed of God, was wealthy in flocks and substance.  But, Simeon & Levi, foiled their plans and instead sacked ShechemJacob was inagered with his sons for the deeds, but Simeon & Levi saw it, as if their sister had been taken to be a harlot.

Jacob, then made it so that all of his household, were to know the God that preserved him throughout his years.  So, he made sure that they put away strange things from among them, before going to Bethel once more.  Deborah, who came with Jacob‘s mother Rebekah to the land of Canaan with Isaac, dies just before God appears to Jacob again.  Rachel, Jacob‘s wife, then bear labor pains for the second time, & bear a second son, which she named “Benoni“(son of my sorrow), but Jacob named him, “Benjamin“(son of my right hand).  But, Rachel passed at Ephrath, in Bethleham.  Jacob set a memorial stone on the grave of his wife, Rachel.

Jacob & Leah, went to see Isaac, but while they were away Reuben, lusted after Bilhah & lay with her unknowingly to her before it was too late for her to notice that she was not with her husband; but Reuben loved her, as if she were to be his wife.  Jacob was exceedingly wroth with Reuben because he had lain with Bilhah.” (Apocrapha: Gen. 35)  For this, Reuben defiled his birthright, as the firstborn of Israel.

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So, with this Hebrew Shabbat(or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, nonetheless studied the Torah portion of Lecḥ Lecḥá – לֶךְ-לְךָ , on the 10th – י, & the 11th – יא, of the month of Cḥeshw(v)an – חֶשְׁוָן, [this Hebraic month is also known as; Mar’Cḥeshw(v)an – מַרְחֶשְׁוָן]‎in the year of 5780. (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2012/7512; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known, also as; Tӓlӓytӓ Wӓṭăh – ተለይተህ ወጣ, on the 9th – ፱, & the 10th – ፲,  of the (ወርኀ)month of T’Qĭmt – ጥቅምት.  The Ethiopic calendar is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet-ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic, which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez-(ግእዝ).

Leaving off with descendants of Noah, from the last portion of the Scripture studies, LeKH’ LeKH’a-לֶךְ-לְךָ is the set of readings for this Sabbath.

Abram of Ur, in Chaldea, a descendant of Noah, was spoken to by God.

Abram, was told by God to leave his country and people, in Chaldea.  So Abram, left with Sarai(his wife), and Lot(his nephew) traveled south.  God sought to bless Abram, exceedingly.

Famine in those lands took Abram to Egypt, where passed off his wife, as his sister; for he feared he would be killed because of her beauty, in the sight of the Egyptians.

 But, because of her beauty Pharaoh sought to entreat her, for he sought to make her a wife of his.  But, his mind was plagued because of Sarai(Abram’s wife).  So much so, that he confronted Abram about the situation and ended up sending on their way peacefully, with quite hefty caravan.

While in Egypt, Abram and his family acquired very much, in riches.  But, if got to the point where there was strife among them, (within their camps).  Lot(Abram’s nephew) and Abram, consolidated to negotiate not to struggle with each other for there was so much land, that they need not quarrel over anything.

But, the men of Sodom, near where Abram had made a place for him cattle, herds, and possessions were a wicked and distasteful people.  Wickedness abounded so much so, to the point that Abram separated himself from among them, at Mamre, in Hebron.

Abram, was then blessed by God, in that by his wife Sarai, who was barren, would give birth to a son. (even in their old age)  Abram was given vision by God, that his seed would be innumerable, for he would be the father of many nations.  God instructed Abram, to make offerings, he did it & guarded it.

Then Abram had visions of the future generations of his to come.

Sarai, feeling as though she had been restrained by God from bearing any children, gave Abram, her maid, Hagar(Agar), who was an Egyptian, in attempt beget children of AbramHagar, conceived of Abram, but saw Sarai, differently afterwards. (by contempt)  Sarai, then feeling as though she brought about strife in Abram‘s house, she brought the plight to Abram, and wanted Abram to put her away.  God, complied because he sought to make the child of Hagar & Abram, a mighty nations of his own. (his name would be Ishmael)

Hagar & Isma'il (ibn Ibrahim)

Between Abram & God, was a covenant made: for he would the father of many nations, and be fruitful exceedingly, kings would be from him, the land between the two rivers would be of his possession, & the land of Canaan would be for an everlasting possession, his seed shall circumcise their flesh(males); also he & his wife would have new names.  Instead of Abram, his name would be Abraham & instead of Sarai, her name would be Sarah.

Abraham would also have a son, which he would name Isaac, his son Ishmael would grow to be a mighty nation.

This Sabbath study portion; Shoftim-שֹׁפְטִים , (in the Hebrew language, has equivalences to: magistrates[officers] or judges);

(in the Amharic language, the equivalent is plurally: Ferajoch-ፈራጆች; which more than likely could derived from words like: Feraj-ፈራጅ[could be considered as an police officer, or jailer; of the sort, from a modern sense]; also Tefárajተፋራጅ; which could be considered as a judge or magistrate from the modern sense, as well: from the Amharic is equivalent to “one who brings justice.”)

So, this Torah portion is at the point where Moses now instructs the children of Israel to set up judges and officers, throughout all of the tribes, whom should utilize just judgments in certain affairs.

In all of the gates that in possession of the children of Israel, no blemished, or defiled thing should be offered as sacrifice/offering to God.  Neither, were the children of Israel to go after(worship) any other gods.  They also were instructed to put evil away from among them.

A king/ruler was also to be appointed over the children of Israel.  One, whom would not give himself utterly to seek after wealth & riches, or many women to wife(marry), so that his heart be turned away from God; his laws, ordinances, statutes and commandments.  While upon the throne, the king was to write a copy the LAW, set before the priests; wherein he was to read & learn, all the days of his life so that the days of his life be prolonged.  The king was to keep the all the commandments, like anyone else, & not think of himself, as being above any of his brethren, aside from his appointment by God.

Within the land, the tribe of Levi(Lewi), were to have no inheritance with the children of Israel.  For God, was their portion of the inheritance,  Offerings to God, would partaken on behalf of God, by the priests of the Levites; from among the sacrifices/offerings, would be the “priest’s due.”

Idolatry & the abominations, were not to be found among the children of Israel, for they were to inherit all nations.

God also said to Israel, that he would raise up a Prophet from among them.  The words of his mouth would be of him, and they should take heed.  For, at the mountain of Horeb, they feared the power, the voice and great fire of God, so much that they asked to not see it again, lest they perish.

The only for the children of Israel to know if the Prophet was of God, would be for them to verify by a testing of his word.  The testing would come in a criteria that would fit, as follows: 1. his/her, spoken words of prophecy coming to pass(or fulfillment; actualization), 2. he/she, would come in the NAME of God, & 3. if the prophecies followed along the guidelines of the LAW(Torah).

(could also be seen as the coming of the MesHIHa/Messiah)

The cities of refuge from within the gates of Israel’s inheritance were to also be set up.  Especially, in the plight of the case of the slayer.  When God was to cut out the wicked nations these cities were to set, to ensure that just judgment were rendered.

The Law regarding Warfare, was for the children of Israel to fear not, even if their enemies were greater in number or strength; for God would be with them.  The priests were to encourage them, & men who set up houses, or married rather recently not having consecrated their homes or wives, should return or in the extreme, not go off to warfare, for their seeds were to be procured.(as spoken by the officers of Israel)  Israel was to show peace to those who would show themselves peaceful, & go to war against those who would make war with them.  But, they were to utterly destroy the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites and the Jebusites, as God commanded them.

An Inquest or judiciary inquiry, in the case of death, of unknown/unaccounted corpse, for one slain in the field; would become the responsibility of the Priesthood to minister for the children of Israel, for they were chosen by God to work in service of Israel.
