2. Abíy Tẓ’ōm – ዐቢይ ጾም / ዓብይ ጾም ✤ Hūdădæ – ሑዳዴ (the Lenten Fast)

This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

I welcome you all to another celebratory posting as we move closer to monumental commemoration of the Hebraic Purïm & Passover.  This time is set for recollection and reexamination of one’s self.  Fasting & prayer is key leading up to the Passover.

In continuation already set by the first day of the Samint/Shabua (loosely translated; the week); we begin the 2nd level of the count in Abïy T’zōm – አብይ ፆም/ዓቢይ ጾም.

Abiy Tsom/ Hudade = the Great Lenten Fast

RasTafari Renaissance continues to celebrate in the Tewahedo faith the “Great Fast,” or Abíy Tẓ’ōm – ዐቢይ ጾም / ዓቢይ ጾም.  This period in the Ethiopian & Eritrean Churches, which are also known as the “Tewahido/Tewahedo” churches clustered with the other Orthodox sister churches (ie. Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox etc etc) have similar practices which have orderly examples in which they observe this time leading up to Passover; known to the greater world as “Easter.”  You may know of this time especially in the West, that leads to Easter.

To the Ethiopian & Eritrean Orthodox Churches, Lent (Hūdădæ – ሑዳዴ) Abíy Tẓ’ōm,  means a period of fasting when the faithful undergo a rigorous schedule of prayers and penitence. This fast is observed with greater rigor than any other fast and it is a test of one’s Christianity.  One who fails to keep it is not considered a good Christian.  Properly observed it nullifies the sins committed during the rest of the year.  The faithful should abstain from all food except bread, water and salt.  It consists of about 56 days (opposite of the Western Christian – 40 days), all meat is forbidden, and also, what are called “lactina/lactose;” milk, butter, cheese, eggs, etc, by practical sense.

This second week, focusing on verses from the Book of Matthew chapter 6: verses 16-24.

Each week of the Great Lent has its own name associated with what Christ did or taught. The names and the corresponding part for readings, of the bible are shown below with each Sunday heralding the beginning of each week & focus reading.

Fasting is appears in many religions around the world, but, as ones would know, in the west it has lost its rigour for the majority of peoples. However, in the Ethiopian/Eritrean Orthodox church & to the extent of the other Orthodox churches of the east; there are many fasting days through the year.  In the most strict observances, all fasters would be vegan for half the year.  The longest of the fasts is our topic here in the Hudade(i)/ Abiy Tsom season.  So, as the Lenten Fast or the “Great Fast,” leads up to Easter/Passover it is variously known in dfferent forms, and the majority of adherent of the Orthodox churches approximately fast for these 55 days every year.

I welcome you all to a new regenartion of cycle Torah readings!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) into the study of the Scriptures.

So,with this Hebrew Shabbot (or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to the opening of the Torah portion with V(W)aYikra – וַיִּקְרָא, from a Jewish/Hebrew mode of study for those out in the diaspora, living outside of Jerusalem or Israel.  From the Jewish or Hebraic Calendar in the 5776 this Sabbath day would probably fall on the 8th – ח, & on the 9th – ט, of the month of  Adar-אֲדָר . (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known as Ṭärtō – ጠርቶ; on the 9th – ፱, & on the 10th – ፲, of ወርኀ(month) of መጋቢት (Megabeet).  On the Ethiopic calendar [7508/2008 E.C.], which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church(the other language being Ge’ez-ግእዝ).

For this week, in the portion of the study of the Scriptures, we’ve come to W(V)ayikra.  In the translation, the topic refers to the first line of the readings; “…& he called…”  The laws and ordinances of sacrifice were laid out for the children of Israel.  Moses receives the laws and statutes for the “Sacrifices”/”Offerings,” which are to be made for forgiveness/atonement for sins of the children of Israel. The details are explained to Moses, in relevance to the nature or the action, of the sin that may have been committed. Upon the realization of the sin, its offerings are categorized in different ways.

the sacrifice of an animal permissible for the action, was to take the place of the sinner, who had sinned against God, his commandments, or laws and statutes. Sin was forgiven by faith and repentance, but no because of the ultimate sacrifice, & fulfillment of Scriptures, Christ took on the sins of the world, like a Paschal Lamb of Passover.

The Paschal Lamb was the unblemished animal which used to mark the doors of the Israelites on the night the 10th plague of the “Death of the First Born Of Egypt” was to pass through the land.

Christ established the new covenant with sacrificing himself, which also became revealed in his speaking over the sharing of the Passover Seder, with the apostles, in the Upper Room.

The offering of sacrificial animals and grains were a strong focal point of the Torah, not bribe God, for every animal of the earth, God created, was and belonged to God, anyway.  Blood made a consecration and an atonement, with God. Blood is the life of flesh, so the blood makes atonement for the soul and the is symbolizes holiness through sacrifice. The sacrificial system made a representation of a life sacrificed for a life, with the wage of sin being death.

This portion of our studies in the Scriptures, will conclude the first of Book of Genesis.  While continuing study in the last Torah portion of Genesis the study deals with Jacob‘s(Israel) tenure in Egypt.  Jacob(Israel), felt that the time drew near to his death, so he spoke to his son, Joseph; telling him of an obligation he would like his son to fulfill.

Jacob(Israel) desired to be laid to rest among his ancestors in the land of Canaan, which God has promised that his descendants would inherit.

Joseph, after speaking with his father, Jacob(Israel) and taking into account that his father drew close to his death; Joseph brought his two sons, Manasseh & Ephraim to him.

  Jacob(Israel), told his two grandsons [Manasseh & Ephraim] to come closer for he would bless them according to the covenant he received from God and his ancestors: Abraham & Isaac.  Oddly, Jacob(Israel), blessed Ephraim, the younger son, in the place of the elder son, Manasseh.  Even, after the attempts of Joseph, who noticed that his father blessed his younger son in the place of his eldest and vice-versa.

After blessing his grandchildren, Jacob(Israel), then proceeded to bless all of his children, as well.  Each one receiving a blessing, pertaining to themselves.

Jacob(Israel), then died in Egypt & Joseph, made preparations for his body & burial, but more importantly the fulfillment of his oath to his father.  Because Joseph, was such a great man of stature in Egypt, the passing of his father was a grievous thing among the Egyptians.*  This was so much so, that when Joseph, went to Pharaoh and told him of the oath that his father wished him to fulfill, Pharaoh allowed it, even allowing many of the elders of the house, and of the land, along with servants of the house to go with him to Canaan.  But, upon arrival into the land of Canaan, the Canaanites saw the people that brought up Jacob(Israel), from Egypt, & they saw them mourning at Atad….& said “this is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.”*  This day brought about the name of Abel-Mitz’raim-אָבֵל מִצרַיִם, which translates to the “Meadow of Egypt“, or the “Mourning of Egypt.“  All in the procession for the remembrance of the passing of Jacob. [the Patriarch of Israel]

Joseph’s brothers, thought surely after their father’s passing that Joseph would in one way or another return the favor for their jealousy of him from their past.  But Joseph did no such thing, but returned to Egypt & witnessed the birth of his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren until his Joseph’s passing in Egypt.  Joseph also made oath with the all of Israelites; that they should bring his bones out of Egypt & lay him to rest with his ancestors in the land of Canaan. on the (ወርኀ)month of T’Qĭmt-ጥቅምት.

Leaving off with descendants of Noah, from the last portion of the Scripture studies, LeKH’ LeKH’a-לֶךְ-לְךָ is the set of readings for this Sabbath.

Abram of Ur, in Chaldea, a descendant of Noah, was spoken to by God.

Abram, was told by God to leave his country and people, in Chaldea.  So Abram, left with Sarai(his wife), and Lot(his nephew) traveled south.  God sought to bless Abram, exceedingly.

Famine in those lands took Abram to Egypt, where passed off his wife, as his sister; for he feared he would be killed because of her beauty, in the sight of the Egyptians.  But, because of her beauty Pharaoh sought to entreat her, for he sought to make her a wife of his.  But, his mind was plagued because of Sarai(Abram’s wife).  So much so, that he confronted Abram about the situation and ended up sending on their way peacefully, with quite hefty caravan.

While in Egypt, Abram and his family acquired very much, in riches.  But, if got to the point where there was strife among them, (within their camps).  Lot(Abram’s nephew) and Abram, consolidated to negotiate not to struggle with each other for there was so much land, that they need not quarrel over anything.

But, the men of Sodom, near where Abram had made a place for him cattle, herds, and possessions were a wicked and distasteful people.  Wickedness abounded so much so, to the point that Abram separated himself from among them, at Mamre, in Hebron.

War, in those days, between many kings of many nations, brought Sodom & Gomorrah to an expected destruction.  Fortunately, Abram was able to bring Lot out, just before meeting Melchizedek; the king of Salem.

Abram, was then blessed by God, in that by his wife Sarai, who was barren, would give birth to a son. (even in their old age)  Abram was given vision by God, that his seed would be innumerable, for he would be the father of many nations.  God instructed Abram, to make offerings, he did it & guarded it.

Then Abram had visions of the future generations of his to come.

Sarai, feeling as though she had been restrained by God from bearing any children, gave Abram, her maid, Hagar(Agar), who was an Egyptian, in attempt beget children of AbramHagar, conceived of Abram, but saw Sarai, differently afterwards. (by contempt)  Sarai, then feeling as though she brought about strife in Abram‘s house, she brought the plight to Abram, and wanted Abram to put her away.  God, complied because he sought to make the child of Hagar & Abram, a mighty nations of his own. (his name would be Ishmael)

Between Abram & God, was a covenant made: for he would the father of many nations, and be fruitful exceedingly, kings would be from him, the land between the two rivers would be of his possession, & the land of Canaan would be for an everlasting possession, his seed shall circumcise their flesh(males); also he & his wife would have new names.  Instead of Abram, his name would be Abraham & instead of Sarai, her name would be Sarah.

Abraham would also have a son, which he would name Isaac, his son Ishmael would grow to be a mighty nation.

So, with this Hebrew Shabbot(or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, nonetheless studied either the Torah portion of ShelaKH’ LeKH’a-שְׁלַח-לְךָ, from the Jewish or Hebraic Calendar in the year 5774 year, this Sabbath day would probably be accounted for as the 15th-טו, & the 16th-טז, of the month of Siw(v)an-סִיוָן.  (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon) From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known as Lǎk Tĭlkalachu-ላክ ትልካላቹ.  This would calculate as the 6th-፮, & the 7th-፯, of the month(ወርኀ) of Seney’-ሰኔ.  The Ethiopic calendar, which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet-ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church(the other language being Ge’ez-ግእዝ).

Ironically, (or more so MeSeder HaElohim[מסדר האלוהים]”in the Order of God/JAH/YAH“) as we come to the 13th chapter of the kifil-ክፍል(portion), of Shelach’ Lecha’ [שְׁלַח-לְךָ]; we also come to the Gregorian superstitious “Friday the 13th” for our study portion for the end of this 7-day period.  In the Book of Numbers, this 37th parsha-kifil, Moses is now instructed by God to send the chosen Princes of Israel to search/spy/scout the land(Canaan), which God had promised to the children of Israel.

The spies or scouts were to instructed to go the south mountain, to see the land(how it looked/upon view), see what people dwelt there, & if the people there were strong or weak, if there were few or many. They were also instructed to see if the land be a good land, what cities in the land were inhabited, and if those cities (inhabited) were “strongly held.”  They were to be “of good courage” and bring fruits of the land to prove that it had been seen, for it was the due season of the “first-fruits.”

The scouts searched the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob and came to Hebron, where the children of Anak.

The scouts took up the fruits of the land, as instructed, at the Brook of Eshol.  They took the cluster of grapes, pomegranates, and figs; then they returned to the wilderness where Israel was encamped & gave their reports of the land (which they stayed 40 days) from their searching.

Caleb brought a good report to Moses, Aaron, and those of the congregation that heard him.  Even, so much so that Caleb said, “…Let us go up at once, and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it…”[Numb. 13: 30]  But, the men that went with him brought a evil/bad report (evil-because it was wrapped in lies tied to some of the truth); “…the land eat(eth) up the inhabitants…, [all the people were of great stature]…”

At the sounds of the ten evil/bad reports of the scouts, who came to give their assessment on the land which was promised to the Hebrews; the children of Israel wept and began to murmur against Moses and Aaron, for they saw the ten evil/bad reports as truth, also that God had brought them out of Egypt and into the wilderness to die.  The children of Israel had planted seeds in their own minds from the bad reports that their wives and their children, would become prey, as they fell by the sword.  They even saw it may have been better to return to Egypt.  So much so, that they spoke to each other to make a captain that would campaign to take them back to Egypt.

Moses and Aaron, then fell on their face before the congregation of Hebrews, for they could not comprehend why the children of Israel, would go as far to think, the things they were thinking.  Then Joshua and Caleb, told the truth about the report on the scouting of the land, the people (the Amorites, Jebusites, & Hittites resided in the mountains: the Amalekites to the south: & also the Canaanites resided near the sea and the coast of the Jordan [river].  Then, God became angered with Israel because of their weak faith and murmuring; for their provoking, he sought to destroy them

Moses then, interceded for the children of Israel and because of his pleading words to God, their lives were spared.  But, God would not allow them to enter into the Land of Promise.  Forty years, in the wilderness, would their children wander bearing the whoredoms of their parents.

The laws and statues, rules and regulations for the offerings/sacrifices that were to be administered upon entry into the land that was promised, were reiterated to the children of Israel.

God then spoke to Moses, telling him to instruct the children of Israel to make fringes upon the borders of their garments; the fringes were also to have a ribband of blue.  These fringes, with the ribband of blue were for the children of Israel to keep throughout their generations.  The fringes were to be a reminder of the commandments of God, and that they should observe them and do(keep) them.  The Israelites were to look[observe] upon the fringes, and keep[do] the commandments of God; to not seek after their own hearts and eyes, which would take them ‘a whoring’ away.
