I welcome you all to a new regeneration of cycle Torah readings!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

Again, this is Lidj Yefdi, wishing everyone a very blessed Sukkot!  Other names for this High Holy Day or appointed time as translated from the Hebrew language comes to us as; the “Feast of Booths,” the “Tabernacles/Festival of Tabernacles,” or as the “Ingathering.”

The Festival of Sukkot begins on the 15th, of the Hebrew month of Tishrei & is observed for seven days. (five days after Yom Kippur)  Sukkot, is in many ways very opposite to the observance of Yom Kippur, especially as ones would know and find it among peoples of today.  One reason in saying this is that Sukkot is very joyful and it is commonly referred to in modern day Jewish prayer and literature as Z’man Símcḥatéinu זמן שמחתינו; more literally translated to the English language as: “The Season of Our Rejoicing.”  Now in a similar fashion of the celebration of Passover and Shabuot, Sukkot has a significance that is doubled in a sense, especially when pertaining to its historical and agricultural perspectives.

In a historical manner, the celebration of Sukkot commemorates the (40) forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the wilderness, living in temporary shelters.  Hence, for the term “Feast or Festival of Tabernacles,” in the similar way the Tabernacle/Tent of Meeting and encampment of the children of Israel was constructed while making the Exodus with the significant role of the furnishings playing their respective parts.    Agriculturally, Sukkot is a harvest festival and is sometimes referred to as Chag Ha-Asífחג האסף, translating to the “Festival of Ingathering.”

Sukkot is the third and the culmination of the Shalosh Regalim, or commonly known as the “Three Pilgrimage Festivals of Israel.”

Sukkot is a very joyous festival/feast day, & there are various ways of maintaining observances.  In the final of day of the memorial of Sukkot, the day is referred to as HoShanna Rabbah, which is a special observance with the use of bundling willow branches.

Sukkot, in summation is the children of Israel residing in a temporary state, resembling & calling to remembrance the time in the wilderness post-Exodus but, pre-entering into the Land of Promise.

I welcome you all to a new regeneration of cycle Torah readings!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So,with this Hebrew Shabbot (or Shabbat) we move into the opening of the Torah portion with W(V)ayeileḥ – וַיֵּלֶךְ, on the 5thה, & on the 6th – ו, of the month of Tishreï – תִּשְׁרִי, in the year of 5780. (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2012/7512; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known, also as, Musæy’m Hæydo – ሙሴም ሄዶThis would calculate as the 27th – ፳፯, & the 28th – ፳፰, of the month of Mäskäräm- መስከረም.  The Ethiopic calendar is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic, which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez – (ግእዝ).

In this added installation of the Sabbath readings for this week; Moses prepared the children of Israel to go into the Land of Promise.  Moses, being an hundred and twenty years old, knew that the time had come when God said that he would not cross the Jordan(river).  Because, he did not sanctify God, at the waters of Meribah, he would go to sleep with his fathers, instead of enter into the Promised Land.  Moses is instructed to charge Joshua ben-Nun(the son of Nun) to lead the people in the ways God had commanded them.

Moses then, wrote the words of the Law, and had them placed into the Ark of the Covenant by the priests(ie. the Levites) and all the elders of Israel.

He also instructed the children of Israel to set apart the Seventh Year as the “Year of Release”(or the Shemittah – שמיטה), during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths/Ingathering(ie. Sukkot – סֻכּוֹת), all of Israel should come to hear the Law, to call it to their remembrance for their following generations to know and obey.

Moses brought Joshua in the presence of all Israel to bless him, give him his charge, where God was present with them.  For God knew that the children of Israel would turn away from the ways that they were taught.

In this study portion of the Scriptures, we’ve come Re’eh (רְאֵה), which in the Hebrew language means “to see.”  In the Amharic language, the word used as an equivalent for the name of this parsha is more properly…would be; Ra’iy – ራእይ.  Theses words in the ancient tongues divulge the meanings: “to see,” “have a vision,” “behold,” or “make sight of.”

This portion of our reading, in the Book of Deuteronomy, begins on verse 26, where Moses is continuing to instruct the children of Israel, in the ways of God’s statutes, laws, and commandments; especially for the entry into the Land of Promise.  Causing these instructions to become known among all Israel, whereas it would be well with them.  God told Moses, to teach the children of Israel these lessons, for Moses explained that God had set a Blessing & a Curse before them.  Following the ways of God would render blessings upon them, and turning away would bring curse upon them.  The children of Israel, were clearly free to choose.

The conditions of the blessing in the land, for the children of Israel were also given by Moses, from God.  The children of Israel were to observe, and do the will of God for it would determine the prosperity of their dwelling in the land.  The laws, statutes, and commandments were laid out so the children of Israel, would teach them to their children for God’s laws and covenant with Israel would be an everlasting covenant; given they take heed of themselves.

Now, knowing that they were given the chance to choose; the children of Israel, were to also recognize that it would be necessary to know wherein they were to discern between choices.  The children of Israel were warned to be wary of prophets or dreamers of dreams that would arise among them, and to take precaution that their signs and their wonders, would not lead them away from the ways of God’s commandments.

Then, the ordination for what would become known as Kashrut – כַּשְׁרוּת , or Kosher – כָּשֵׁר , among the Jewish people of today’s society.  But from its roots in the Hebrew language , it is the laws of God, to the Hebrew people, showing what would be “fit” for consumption; concerning food.

Now, in dealing with servants: those of the inheritance and those of foreign origin there was, of course, a protocol for the children of Israel, as well.  The Hebrew servant was to be absolved from his Hebrew creditor, in the “Sabbath yearShemittah” or the 7th year.  But, it would be up to the Hebrew creditor to absolve a debt from a foreigner or one not of the origin of the Hebrew people.  God sought that none should be poor among Israel, so in this act, the children of Israel would contribute to their own prosperity in another form.

The children of Israel received what is known now, as the significance of the Shalosh Regalim, or the three Feasts of YHWH.

8. Abíy Tẓ’ōm – ዐቢይ ጾም / ዓብይ ጾም ✤ Hūdădæ – ሑዳዴ (the Lenten Fast)

This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes to give perspective to the Hebraic remembrance of the Passover. In modern Judaism, it is known by the Hebrew term as Pesach – פֶּסַח. (In the Ethiopic sense this is known as Fasika – ፋሲካ; which phonetically/linguistically similar.) Jewish traditions celebrate the liberation from slavery but, moreso the bondage spiritually, financialy, and socially in Egypt approx., 3,300 yrs ago by God; during the time of the Pharaohs.  Their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses began a traverse through the wilderness and desert lands of the Sinai Peninsual and the Levant. But, from the Ethiopian-Hebraic perspective, the liberation came from within a spiritual, socio-political, and religious viewpoints between Northern Egypt(Lower Egypt) & Southern Egypt(Upper Egypt).

Passover is considered apart of the Shalosh Regalim, or the main festivals of Israel’s commemoration to God. The day commences on the afternoon of the Hebraic, 14th of the month of Nisan/Abïb.

 This time is set for recollection and reexamination of one’s self.  Fasting & prayer is key leading up to the Passover.

In continuation already set by the first day of the Samint/Shabua (loosely translated; the week); we move into the culminating level of the count in Abïy T’zōm – አብይ ፆም/ዓቢይ ጾም.

Abiy Tsom/ Hudade = the Great Lenten Fast

RasTafari Renaissance continues to celebrate in the Tewahedo faith the “Great Fast,” or Abíy Tẓ’ōm – ዐቢይ ጾም / ዓቢይ ጾም.  This period in the Ethiopian & Eritrean Churches, which are also known as the “Tewahido/Tewahedo” churches clustered with the other Orthodox sister churches (ie. Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox etc.) have similar practices which have orderly examples in which they observe this time leading up to Passover; known to the greater world as “Easter.”  You may know of this time especially in the West, that leads to Easter.

Passover commemorates the story of the Exodus, in which the ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar, which is in spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and is celebrated for seven or eight days. It is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays.

 

To the Ethiopian & Eritrean Orthodox Churches, Lent (Hūdădæ – ሑዳዴ) Abíy Tẓ’ōm,  means a period of fasting when the faithful undergo a rigorous schedule of prayers and penitence. This fast is observed with greater rigor than any other fast and it is a test of one’s Christianity.  One who fails to keep it is not considered a good Christian.  Properly observed it nullifies the sins committed during the rest of the year.  The faithful should abstain from all food except bread, water and salt.  It consists of about 56 days (opposite of the Western Christian – 40 days), all meat is forbidden, and also, what are called “lactina/lactose;” milk, butter, cheese, eggs, etc, by practical sense.

This eighth week’s readings, focus on verses from the Book of John chapter 11: verses 1-10.

Each week of the Great Lent has its own name associated with what Christ did or taught. The names and the corresponding part for readings, of the bible are shown below with each Sunday heralding the beginning of each week & focus reading.

Fasting is appears in many religions around the world, but, as ones would know, in the west it has lost its rigour for the majority of peoples. However, in the Ethiopian/Eritrean Orthodox church & to the extent of the other Orthodox churches of the east; there are many fasting days through the year.  In the most strict observances, all fasters would be vegan for half the year.  The longest of the fasts is our topic here in the Hudade(i)/ Abiy Tsom season.  So, as the Lenten Fast or the “Great Fast,” leads up to Easter/Passover it is variously known in dfferent forms, and the majority of adherent of the Orthodox churches approximately fast for these 55 days every year.

This is Lidj Yefdi, here at Ras Tafari Renaissance Revelations, hoping all of you are in good health: mind, body & spirit; & if you just happen to be on the downside of your particular scenario, I, personally hope, wish & pray that you be given, as well as, you receive, the strength which is needed to overcome the specific situation.

As we have completed a cycle of Torah reading/studies, we as Hebrew people, as well as they who choose to assemble again, to commemorate the Hebraic memorial of Sukkot.  As Succoth, is an “Ingathering” for faithful Hebrews, this assembly on the eighth day of a seven day festival renders a Sabbath of completion of Torah readings and Hebrew Year. (also gathering of the harvest)

Some may include, Shemini Atz’eret with the days of Sukkot or regard them as one, but this is not the case.  Shemini At’zeret was to be a sloemn assembly of its own.

Some Sukkot observances carry over into Shemini At’zeret; seeing as it is the closing the Sukkot memorial.  Readings, from the Torah & Nebi’im, along with services in most synagogues/temples of Hebraic peoples are read, where a Prayer/Psalm for Rain [Tefillat Gesham], for the year ahead, (for the crops, that were to be grown) may be recited.

This Hebraic celebration culminates the appointed time of the High Holy days congruent with Sukkot.
The final day of Sukkot brings us to Hoshanna Raba.  Hoshanna Raba, is the commemoration of the “Supplication,” or the “Divine Judgment.”

Orthodox Jews, and other Chassidic sects gather for a special service.  In this special service the participants make seven (7) circuits in ritual, around the synagogue with their made lula(b)v & etrons.  (*symbolic of Sukkot)

In variating sects, the Shofar(or the trumpet) is sounded after every circuit is made.  The Torah scrolls are taken out of the made Arks on this commemoration day as well.  Reasoning behind these ritualistic principles is recognizing the “Final Judgment” in the last days from the initiation of the seasonal appointed times. (Hebraic holidays)*

Judgment , in doctrine of the European Jewish theory, for the new year is sealed on Yom Kippur but, not delivered until Hoshanna.  These teachings come from the original interpretation of the celebration, and memorials of the Hebrew people, especially from the time of the 2nd Temple of Jerusalem.

In the Midrash, there is also another application containing the willow.  “The “Day of the Willow,” when on the seventh day, traditionally participants in Hoshanna Raba take a willow and have it present with the other “4 Species” or “4 Kinds”.  (of the symbols from Sukkot)*

Now, from an Ethiopic perspective and a Christian one, Hosanna (Hoshanna) takes on a bit a different interpretation.  But, repentance is most certainly a theme echoed in it as well.  Not to mention the commemoration has a different orientation in the timing of the celebratory recognition.  But, also with that repentance is the recognition of the significance of Christ, of course.  Christ rode into Jerusalem on the back of donkey(ass) with the Disciples and the palms, were carried by all of the people.  Very significant when you are able to compare this from Scripture to the practices and tradtions of the Jewish and Hebrew people celebration Hoshanna.
