I welcome you all to yet another posting here at Ras Tafari Renaissance!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes in this 400th year of the dispensation (Biblical prophecy of the children of Israel, being afflicted or entreated evil, for four hundred years: Gen. 15:13, & Acts 7:6 )to give perspective to the Ethiopian commemoration of what is known in Ras Tafarian circles as the “EarthStrong” or Birth date of Ras Tafari, H.I.M.self.  Prophecies were fulfilled,stars were aligned (especially pertaining to the Inundation of the Nile River & the so-called “Dog-Star” constellation), what more can we here at Ras Tafari Renaissance say about the birth date, of His Imperial Majesty Haile Sellassie (born July 23, 1892;  Täfäri Makʷennin woldä-Mikáèl [ተፈሪ መኳንን ወልደ ሚካኤል]), in Ejersa Goro; Harar Province, Ethiopia; Africa.

In Ejersa Goro,  he was born to Ras Makʷennin & Yashimabet Ali, just outside of Harar; even in a Christ-like manner in rural Harar, of the late 1800s.

The youngest of ten children,  Täfäri was the only surviving and legitimate son of Ras Makonnen, the governor of Harar, which allowed him to become involved in the political field (if you please…?), as far as, the Kingdom of Ethiopia stood.

The coming forth of Haile Sellassie to the earthly plane was an emphatic occurrence that its still celebrated to this day in age, especially by Ras Tafarians worldwide.  Mainly because of its prophetic institution, and Biblical reverence within historical events.  These succeeding events that took place, worldwide but especially in Ethiopia, brought about the recognition of the importance of the Scriptures, in real time.

I welcome you all to a new regeneration of cycle Torah readings!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So,with this Hebrew Shabbot (or Shabbat) we move into the opening of the Torah portion with C(K)ḥukat חֻקַּתon the 9th – ט, & the 10th – י , of the month of Tammuz – תמוז, in the year of 5776. (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2008/7508; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known as YäHíggu Ti’ízáz Y’h’ Näw – የሕጉ ትእዛዝ ይህ ነው, on the 8th – ፰, & on the 9th – ፱, of the month (ወርኀ) of Hämlæy – ሐምሌ.  The Ethiopic calendar, which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez – ግእዝ).

On this Sabbath, we study where Moses and his brother Aaron, receive the ordinance of the law, in which God commanded them to take a “red heifer,” in the order for sacrifice/offering.  Instead of this offering being of the male of the first year, this one was to be of the female; also, she was not to be offered in the Tabernacle (Mishkan/Dinkʷan) but, to be offered outside of the camp, for her blood was to be sprinkled seven(7) times before the Tabernacle of the congregation, with the finger of Eleazar (Levite priest-son of Aaron).

The law for the death of a man in a tent, was also given to the children of Israel, in this portion of the Scriptures.  Seven(7) days shall the tent, any open vessel, which hath no covering, whosoever touched the one slain/deceased, in the open field, or the grave would be unclean.

Upon the trek of the children of Israel, when they had come to Kadesh-Barnea, Miriam the Prophetess, (Moses’ sister) was gathered to her people(passed to the spirit world)

As the journey in the wilderness continued, the children of Israel grew restless once again.  The congregation gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron.  They spoke ill off them, bringing them further into the wilderness to die of thirst, for there was no water.  Moses and Aaron went before the Tabernacle and fell on their faces(bowing in a plea to God).  God appeared to them, and spoke to Moses, instructing him to take his rod and gather the assembly of the children of Israel with Aaron.  Then he was to speak to the Rock, in front of the Hebrews and there water would come from the Rock; enough for the entire community of Israel.  Moses, along with Aaron gathered the people and brought them before the Rock, but in frustration with the constant murmuring and doubt of the children of Israel, instead of speaking to the Rock, Moses struck it with his rod, twice and water came from quenching the thirst of all the people and their cattle.

Because of Moses’ disobedience, and because he waxed hot (became angered with the children of Israel; allowing his frustration to interfere with the instruction given to him by God);  God told him that he would not bring the people into the land, which was promised to their forefathers.  & the waters, which came from the Rock in that place, because the children of Israel strove with God; would be called Meribah (which was to mean= quarrel, to strive, or provocation)

Moses then sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, requesting safe passage through the land of Edom, assuring that nothing would stolen and the Hebrews come not to quarrel with any of the inhabitants of the land.  But, Edom would not allow Israel to pass through the land.  Edom warned Israel that if Israel was to pass through Edom would come out with the sword.  Moses speaking for Israel, assured again the nothing would taken and if so, it would be recompensed but, Edom refused once again; and came out to divert Israel from their path.  Israel, then turned away from Edom and journeyed from Kadesh to Mount Hor.

{keep in mind: while going through this portion of the Scriptures lesson “Edom” equated/represents the , who became known as Edom; & when the Scriptures speak of “Israel,” even from a singular tone, it is speaking of the children of Israel/the Israelites.  Jacob, twin brother of Esau, would become known as “Israel” & father what would be known as the Twelve Tribes Of Israel.}

God, then spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor.  God said to them that Aaron (Moses’ brother), would be gathered to his people, and not enter into the land promised, to the children of Israel’s forefathers,for the rebellious actions at the waters of Meribah.  So upon Mount Hor, Aaron’s place as the Kahin HaGadol(High Priest) would pass along to his eldest son, Eleazar.  Moses was to take the garments and vestments of the High Priest and placed on and in the possession of his nephew, Eleazar.  Aaron then passes, leaving the Priesthood in the hands of son Eleazar, at Mount Hor.

A Canaanite king, whose name was Arad, heard word of the children of Israel making trek to Canaan and he went out to fight against them and took some of them prisoners.  Israel, made vow with God, that if those of the Canaanite king Arad, who took some of the Hebrews as prisoners, were delivered into their hands, they would utterly destroy their cities.  God heard them, and gave way to for them to keep their word, and it was made so, to the extent that the place where the king Arad, the Canaanite dominion was, would be called Hormah,for it was close to Mount Hor, where the passing of Aaron, was.

After the victory over Arad, the Canaanite king, the children of Israel journeyed from Mount Hor, by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom, and then the soul of the people grew weary, becoming discouraged.  Again, they spoke against Moses, moaning and groaning for food and water.  God sent fiery serpents, among the people and were bitten by them.  Many of the children of Israel died because of this, and turned to Moses, asking him to forgive them their doubt, and intercede with God for them.  Moses prayed for them and God instructed Moses, to make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole so that every one that looked upon it would live.  Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it on a pole and what God said, had come to pass.  Those that looked upon the Brazen Serpent lived,  in spite of being bitten by the other serpents.

The children of Israel set forward and then, making their journey East around Edom; (From Kadesh-through-Moab) until they came to Beer(pronounced Ba-e’yr) where they then were given water to drink from God.

Israel, sent messengers to Sihon the king of the Amorites, requesting permission safe passage through the land of the Amorites, in the same manner that Israel requested of Arad, whom was a Canaanite king.  Israel would not take anything that was not their own and would not quarrel with any of the inhabitants of the land of the Amorites.  Sihon, wouldn’t let Israel pass through either, and gathered all his people together, to go out against Israel.  At Jahaz, the Amorites fought against Israel; Israel smote the Amorites with sword and then, possessed the lands from Arnon-to-Jabbok, even to the borders of the children of Ammon.

While Israel, dwelt in the land conquered of the Amorites, they also drove out the Amorites in Jaazer.  The children of Israel then, went north, and Og, the king of Bashan, cam out against them but, God told Moses “…to fear him not…,” for he to would be delivered into his hand.  There Israel, smote them and possessed the land there, as well.  Wherein, at that point, the children of Israel pitched camp in the plains of Moab, on the side of Jordan(river), near Jericho.

I welcome you all to again to Ras Tafari Renaissance Revelations, for the Ethiopic celebration of Timk(Q)et.  Timket, is the Ethiopian-Christian celebration in a symbolic manner of “Baptism” or “Epiphany.”

Celebrated on the 10th day of the (ወኀ)month of T’ir(ጥር), it commemorates the Adoration of the Magi, who followed the Star of the East, & the Baptism of Christ.
In other references Epiphany, could also be commemorated for the wedding at Cana, also.

In the Ethiopian Orthodox-Tewahedo Church, it is the most important festival in the year, seeing as how the Tabot – ታቦት, or the representation of the Ark of the Covenant is wrapped in priestly cloth and lead in procession for a reenactment of the Baptism of Christ, in the Jordan River.

♔ Ethiopian Celebration of Christmas _ Genna/YeLidet Be’Al (ገና – የልደት በዓል) ♔

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes to give perspective to the Ethiopian holiday of Genna or otherwise called “YeLidet Be’al.”  Because of the calculations of the Ethiopic calendar, we find that the Christmas that is known in the Western world, using the Gregorian calendar doesn’t correspond with the Orthodox Christian churches’ calculations. (though they differ from specific church to church, within the Orthodoxy)  Instead of December 25th, or the twenty-fifth day of the 12th calendar month (Gregorian), we see that the date arrives on January 7th, or the seventh day of the 1st calendar month.

(Orthodox Christian teachings give this as a testimony for the celebration of the birth of Christ)

During the first three centuries [A.D. – Anno Domini/After the Death of Christ], in the Churches of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria and Cyprus, the Nativity of Christ was combined together with the Feast of His Baptism on January 6, and called “Theophany” (“Manifestation of God”).

This was because of a belief that Christ was baptized on the anniversary of His birth, which may be inferred from St. John Chrysostom’s sermon on the Nativity of Christ: “it is not the day on which Christ was born which is called Theophany, but rather that day on which He was baptized.”

By Ethiopic calculations, the birth of Christ, occurs on the Julian calendar‘s framework; predating the Gregorian.  In Eastern Christian (or Orthodox Christian sects) some, Orthodox Christians observe the “Nativity and Adoration of the Shepherds” on January 6th, & the following day may observe, the “Adoration of the Magi” (or otherwise known as the three kings/wise men) on January 7.  Other Orthodox Christians may attend church liturgies on the 6th, or both.

 This is Lidj Yefdi, wishing everyone a very blessed recogition of Hoshana!
This Hebraic celebration culminates the appointed time of the High Holy days congruent with Sukkot.
The final day of Sukkot brings us to Hoshanna Raba.  Hoshanna Raba, is the commemoration of the “Supplication,” or the “Divine Judgment.”

Orthodox Jews, and other Chassidic sects gather for a special service.  In this special service the participants make seven (7) circuits in ritual, around the synagogue with their made lula(b)v & etrons.  (*symbolic of Sukkot)

In variating sects, the Shofar(or the trumpet) is sounded after every circuit is made.  The Torah scrolls are taken out of the made Arks on this commemoration day as well.  Reasoning behind these ritualistic principles is recognizing the “Final Judgment” in the last days from the initiation of the seasonal appointed times. (Hebraic holidays)*

Judgment , in doctrine of the European Jewish theory, for the new year is sealed on Yom Kippur but, not delivered until Hoshanna.  These teachings come from the original interpretation of the celebration, and memorials of the Hebrew people, especially from the time of the 2nd Temple of Jerusalem.

In the Midrash, there is also another application containing the willow.  “The “Day of the Willow,” when on the seventh day, traditionally participants in Hoshanna Raba take a willow and have it present with the other “4 Species” or “4 Kinds”.  (of the symbols from Sukkot)*

Now, from an Ethiopic perspective and a Christian one, Hosanna (Hoshanna) takes on a bit a different interpretation.  But, repentance is most certainly a theme echoed in it as well.  But, also with that repentance is the recognition of the significance of Christ. of course.  Christ rode into Jerusalem on the back of donkey(ass) with the Disciples and the palms, were carried by all of the people.  Very significant when you are able to compare this from Scripture to the practices and tradtions of the Jewish and Hebrew people celebration Hoshanna.

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes to give perspective to the Ethiopic Tewahido-Orthodox, celebration of Fasika.  In other circles of the Liturgical adherents to the Ethiopian Tewahido-Orthodox Church, the name for this observance, can also be called Be’al Tinsa’e-በዓል ትንሣኤ.  I refrain from using the Western Christendom adherances to the psuedo-equivalent, known as Easter; mainly because at the sheer core of the observance of Easter, stems from Greco-Roman Mythology(Eros, Easter Eggs, Easter Bunny, Greek Mythology etc.), and the origin of the celebration of Fasika, comes from the Hebraic, Passover(Pesach/PesaKH’-פֶּסַח) & Feast of Unleavened Bread (KH’ag/Chag Ha’Motz’ot-Chag ha-Matzot (in Hebrew)).

Fasika commemorates the Resurrection of CHRIST, though the exact day for celebration can be calculated from a perspective that is only slightly in contrast to the original calculation.  Through and through, Fasika assuredly gives a better foundation in the surreal conclusion that is the life of CHRIST.

Fasika is an extremely climatic celebration, like the Roman Catholic Church fasting season(often called “Lent“), but predating it by hundreds of years, the Ethiopian Tewahido-Orthodox Church adherents go into a fasting, and prayer period consisting of about approx., 40-to-56 days.  This important and soul-searching, period of time is known to the adherents as Hudade-ሑዳዴ, or Abiy’ Ts’ome-ዓቢይ ጾመ.

The Church, in her earliest days, recognized the necessity for her children to “chastise the body and bring it under subjection”, as St. Paul advises.  The body is ever striving for mastery over the spirit; besides the external sources of temptation, “the world”, we have always another source with us which is a part of our nature. This is the reason for mortificationSelf denial is in lawful things enables us to turn with great earnestness to spiritual things.  It is on these grounds that the Ethiopian church has strictly adhered to the injunctions of the Didascalia and enjoyed upon the faithful, the longest and most austere fasts in the world.  Fasting implies abstention from food and drink, in one sense of understanding. Special days are appointed for fasting.

Every Wednesday and Friday, are days of fasting because on Wednesday the Jews held a council in which they rejected and condemned our Lord (Jesus/Iyesus) and on Friday they crucified him;  according the Christian theology.

The fasting of this particular, observance in the Tewahido Church – (Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church) are ordained by the Fät’há Nägäst – or plainly translated to English as the “Law of the Kings.”

During “Lent” (Hudade/Abiy Ts’om) in Ethiopia, Christians don’t eat or buy any animal products like meat, eggs, butter, milk, yogurt, cream and cheese.

On Palm Sunday, people wear head bands and rings made of palm leaves with crosses marked on them.

The first  Easter Day (Fasika/Tinsa’e) service actually starts at 8.00pm on Easter Saturday night and lasts until 3.00 am on “Easter” Sunday  (Resurrection Sunday) morning! Most people go to the whole service and wear their best clothes. These are often white and are called ‘YeAbesha Libs‘ in the modern time of today more originally “YeEtyopiayawiyan Libs“.  People have candles made of cotton and wax called ‘twaf‘.  At 10.00 pm drummers start playing and accompanying the Priests as they chant a prayer called the ‘Geez‘. (or the Ancient Ethiopic language)
