✡ Shemini Atz’eret (שמיני עצרת) “The 8th Day of Assembly” ✤ BeS’mintegnawm Q’en (በስምንትኛውም ቀን) ✡

Greetings in the name of His & Her Imperial Majesties Qedamawi Haile Sellassie I & Itege Menen Asfaw,

I welcome you all to yet another posting in one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

This is Lidj Yefdi, here at Ras Tafari Renaissance Revelations, hoping all of you are in good health: mind, body & spirit; & if you just happen to be on the downside of your particular scenario, I, personally hope, wish & pray that you be given, as well as, you receive, the strength which is needed to overcome the specific situation.

As we have completed a cycle of Torah reading/studies, we as Hebrew people, as well as they who choose to assemble again, to commemorate the Hebraic memorial of Sukkot.  As Succoth, is an “Ingathering” for faithful Hebrews, this assembly on the eighth day of a seven day festival renders a Sabbath of completion of Torah readings and Hebrew Year. (also gathering of the harvest)

Some may include, Shemini Atz’eret with the days of Sukkot or regard them as one, but this is not the case.  Shemini At’zeret was to be a sloemn assembly of its own.

Some Sukkot observances carry over into Shemini At’zeret; seeing as it is the closing the Sukkot memorial.  Readings, from the Torah & Nebi’im, along with services in most synagogues/temples of Hebraic peoples are read, where a Prayer/Psalm for Rain [Tefillat Gesham], for the year ahead, (for the crops, that were to be grown) may be recited.

✡Hōshánna Raba (הושענא רבא) ✤ Hosaïna (ሆሣዕና)✡

I welcome you all to yet another posting in one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

This is Lidj Yefdi, wishing everyone a very blessed recogition of Hoshana!
This Hebraic celebration culminates the appointed time of the High Holy days congruent with Sukkot.
The final day of Sukkot brings us to Hoshanna Raba.  Hoshanna Raba, is the commemoration of the “Supplication,” or the “Divine Judgment.”

Orthodox Jews, and other Chassidic sects gather for a special service.  In this special service the participants make seven (7) circuits in ritual, around the synagogue with their made lula(b)v & etrons.  (*symbolic of Sukkot)

In variating sects, the Shofar(or the trumpet) is sounded after every circuit is made.  The Torah scrolls are taken out of the made Arks on this commemoration day as well.  Reasoning behind these ritualistic principles is recognizing the “Final Judgment” in the last days from the initiation of the seasonal appointed times. (Hebraic holidays)*

Judgment , in doctrine of the European Jewish theory, for the new year is sealed on Yom Kippur but, not delivered until Hoshanna.  These teachings come from the original interpretation of the celebration, and memorials of the Hebrew people, especially from the time of the 2nd Temple of Jerusalem.

In the Midrash, there is also another application containing the willow.  “The “Day of the Willow,” when on the seventh day, traditionally participants in Hoshanna Raba take a willow and have it present with the other “4 Species” or “4 Kinds”.  (of the symbols from Sukkot)*

Now, from an Ethiopic perspective and a Christian one, Hosanna (Hoshanna) takes on a bit a different interpretation.  But, repentance is most certainly a theme echoed in it as well.  Not to mention the commemoration has a different orientation in the timing of the celebratory recognition.  But, also with that repentance is the recognition of the significance of Christ, of course.  Christ rode into Jerusalem on the back of donkey(ass) with the Disciples and the palms, were carried by all of the people.  Very significant when you are able to compare this from Scripture to the practices and tradtions of the Jewish and Hebrew people celebration Hoshanna.

RSS#40 ( ባላቅ / בָּלָק )

I welcome you all to a new regeneration of cycle Torah readings!  This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij Yef-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So,with this Hebrew Shabbot (or Shabbat) we move into the opening of the Torah portion with Bálâk – בָּלָק, on the 13th – יג, & on the 14th – יד, of the month of Tammuz – תמוז, in the year of 5777. (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2009/7509; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known (in the same sense) as BáláQ – ባላቅ, on the 30th – ፴, of the month(ወርኀ) of Sänæy – ሰኔ, & on the 1st – ፩, of the month (ወርኀ) of Hämlæy – ሐምሌ.  The Ethiopic calendar, which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez – ግእዝ).

As we go forward in our studies, this Sabbath study, Israel after conquest had grown strong in the plain of Moab.  A king of Moab, who’s name was Balak, had seen what the children of Israel did to their adversaries in the habitations that were adjacent to his dominion.

King Balak, then sent messengers to a known “sorcerer“, or man of secret knowledge, whom wasn’t an Israelite; his name was called BalaamBalak devised a plan to have the children of Israel cursed; for they grew strong, the king and the people of Moab feared Israel.   So, it seemed to Balak, that if somehow he could have the children of Israel diverted from their focus then, they could be defeated and driven out of the lands, which they had now possessed.

The elders of Moab, along with the elders of Midian, together plotted against the children of Israel.  As messengers of Balak, the king of Moab, willing to compensate, for this endeavor, they went to Balaam, in a place called Pethor to present the words of Balak.

So, Balaam’s take is cordial with the king of Moab’s messengers & he welcomes them to stay the night, while he utilizes some time, to deliberate with God, whether the children of Israel could be cursed, & how to go about doing so.  God(YHWH), comes to Balaam, in a dream, and speaks with him about the men, who have come to him, & for what purpose.  Balaam says to God, that the men are of, Balak-king of Moab, and they sought him to curse the children of Israel.  After consultation with God, Balaam is not permitted to curse the children of Israel, nor to go with the messengers of Balak to Moab.  The next morning, Balaam tells the messengers that he cannot curse Israel nor go with them to the king; for God refused.  The messengers returned to Moab, and told the king, Balak, the news and the reasoning thereof.

But, Balak was persistent of Balaam to grant his request, so Balak sent others nobles of his influence to further persuade Balaam to Moab.  Balak offered Balaam, honour of distinction within his kingdom, but Balaam refused a second time; not budging a inch,  unwilling to incline his ear to the possible gifts of gold & silver, in abundance.

“…If Balak would give me his house

full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond

the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more…”

[Numb. 22: 18]

Though, with his mind already made up about the situation, which Balak was in high pursuit of, Balaam gives a place to rest for the messengers sent by Balak, for a second night.  In that night, God spoke with Balaam once more saying; if the men of Balak call for you to travel with them, go with them to Balak in Moab.  But, Balaam rose up in the morning and just went with the messengers of Balak, more than likely with no intent giving reverence to the words God spoke; mainly because God’s anger was then kindled against Balaam.  So, while Balaam was on the way to Moab, riding on his donkey, an angel of God appeared in their way, holding a sword-in-hand, standing as an adversary; but only the donkey’s eyes were open to see.  The donkey turned aside, out of the way, into a field, & Balaam smote the donkey in attempt to force the donkey to obey his command.  Balaam mounted the donkey again, and continued along the way, but, in the field there was a vineyard with a two walls on each side.  The angel appeared a second time; with the donkey’s eyes being the only one to see again, so the donkey threw itself towards one wall, crushing Balaam‘s foot into it.  Balaam, smote the donkey a second time.  The angel, then went further on the road and stood, this time in a narrow place where there was no place to turn, to the left or right.  This time seeing the angel, the donkey fell down under Balaam, angering him to smite the donkey a third time with a staff.  At this point, God gave speech to the donkey; and the donkey ask Balaam, why had it been struck three times, along the road.  Balaam answering the donkey said, gave reason because the donkey would not yield to his command, also mentioning that if he had a sword, he would’ve killed the donkey.

But, the donkey spoke once more saying, that was it not the same donkey which Balaam always had ridden; and had there ever been another day where the donkey acted in the manner that it did on this day.  Balaam answered no.  Then God opened Balaam‘s eyes to see the angel, as well; Balaam bowed down falling on his face.  Then the angel explained why the appearances were made and had not the donkey turned off the road those three times, Balaam would have been slain.

After Balaam‘s encounter on the road to Moab, he comes to Balak, but Balak, unknowing of whether his request had been answered officially or not, Balak lets Balaam know that he is not prepared to fulfill the giving of a honorable title or position that was previously promised to him, since he does not know if Balaam had come to Moab, to acknowledge the request of cursing Israel or not.  Balaam goes through the process of seemingly preparing to curse Israel, but, again an inquiry must be made to God (even of his{Balaam’s} psuedo-sorceric powers); this time with the words of God coming to Balak through Balaam.

[Numb. 22: 36-41]

Balaam has Balak set up seven altars upon a place called Kirjath-Huzoth.  There atop that high place overlooking the children of Israel, Balak did as Balaam said, in setting up seven altars.  The seven altars  had a bullock and a ram on each, as offerings & while Balak awaited an answer from Balaam; Balaam inquired of God what was next. God met Balaam, and Balaam told God that the seven altars were in place with their offerings.  God then told Balaam to return to Balak & he shall speak.  Balaam returned to Balak & then God’s words came through Balaam.

whom the LORD hath not defied?…”

Balak, the king of Moab, unsatisfied with the results atop Kirjath-huzoth, pleaded with Balaam to attempt again to curse Israel from another vantage point.  So, he brought Balaam to the field of Zophīm(atop Pisgah)
built the seven altars again, and put the offerings in place.  There he awaited a second answer from Balaam.  Balaam, spoke again to God, & God told him to return to him again & the words would be put in his mouth.

“…Rise up, Balak, and hear, harken to me,

thou son of Zippor:…” _vrs.18

“…God is not a man, that he should lie;

neither the son of man,

that he should repent:

hath he said, and not do it?

or hath he spoken,

and shall he not make it good?…” _vrs.19

In spite of two blessings from Balaam, Balak proposes one more attempt to curse Israel, from another place.  Then he brought Balaam to Peor,that looked out toward Jeshimon.  The pattern of the seven altars and offerings were put into place once more; Balaam, himself, seeing that it pleased God to bless Israel, turned toward thew wilderness, seeing the children of Israel in their tents, seeing the order of Israel.  Balaam, then blessed Israel, yet a third time & cursed those, who would curse them.

There Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, for he said; he brought Balaam to Moab to curse his enemies and he had altogether blessed three times.

Balaam then spoke a prophecy to Balak, from upon Peor.  The prophecy spoke of a Messianic kingdom among Israel.

“…A star shall come out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth….”

Israel dwelt in Shittim, but then began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab; sacrificing and bowing down to their gods, joining themselves to Baal-Peor, and angering the God of Israel.  God, then spoke to Moses, instructing about taking heads of those who commit treason upon Israel and God.  Moses, gathers the judges of Israel & tells them to slay any of them that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.

One even brought a Midianitish woman, (who conspired against them[Israel], to his brethren, even in the sight Moses and the congregation of Israel; who were weeping before the door of the Tabernacle.

Phineas, son of Eleazar, grandson of Aaron (Moses’ brother); rose up from among the people, took a javelin, & thrust it through both the bellies of them.

Now, in continuance of our studies of Torah, we come to the parsha(portion) of Korah’.  Now, in this study of the Scriptures, a Levite, named Korah’ (ben Izhar- son of Izhar), joins himself wth Dathan & Abiram, who are Reubinites(of the Tribe of Reuben), and two-hundred & fifty princes of Israel.  This group began a rebellion, that challenged the authority of Moses and Aaron, among the children of Israel.

God then, spoke to Moses to tell Eleazar(Aaron’s son; a Priest of Levi), to take the censors of Korah, which they took in the Tabernacle for the fire and the incense, and make them broad plates for a covering of the altar.  “They shall be a sign to the children of Israel.”

The next day the children of Israel, murmured against Moses & Aaron, saying, “…they killed people of God…,” and then a plague fell upon them(Israel) and more died, even after those of Korah’s Rebellion suffered judgment.

God then, instructed Moses to gather the staffs of the Princes Of Israel; one for each of the tribes (12) and adding one more the tribe of Levi, in which, Aaron would be the head.  (making that thirteen [13] staff-rods).  God would then choose the staff to show where he would place his authority among the children of Israel, to put an end to their murmuring.  Moses, took the staffs and placed them in the Tabernacle of Witness.

The very next morning, Moses entered into the Tabernacle, only to find that Aaron’s rod, had blossomed and brought forth buds, and also yielded almonds.  Moses brought forth the staff of Aaron, by God’s command to be a witness/memorial to Israel of God’s will way.  Whomsoever go against God’s way would not share in his rest.

God then spoke to Aaron, saying, that he and his sons (lineage), were to perform the duties of service in the Tabernacle, so no wrath would anymore fall upon Israel.  The Levites were to administer the reception of of offerings made by the children of Israel to God in the Tabernacle; but they wouldn’t have an inheritance as the rest of the children of Israel(Tribes) had.  The reason being was & is, because the “tithes” of Israel would be given to them by God.

I welcome you all to a new regeneration of cycle Torah readings! This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (or Yefdeyah). I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) into the study of the Scriptures. So, with this Hebrew Shabbot(or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to the opening of the Torah portions with Acḥáreï Mōt – אַחֲרֵי מוֹת; from a Jewish/Hebrew mode of study for those out in the diaspora, living outside of Jerusalem or Israel.  From the Jewish or Hebraic Calendar in the 5777, this Sabbath day would probably fall on the 10th – י, & on the 11th – יא, of the month of Ïyyâr – אִייָר‎‎, [ this month is also known & referred to from Scripture as “Ziv(w) – זיו” especially in relationship to the Babylonian Exile. ] for this week, in this mode of study; for those out in the diaspora or outside of Jerusalem/Israel. (The Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon) &, from an Ethiopic-Christian perspective, in what may be known as the year 2009/2029/7509, on the Ethiopic calendar.  This calculation, with its readings from the Scriptures, would align to the 28th – ፳፰, & on the 29th – ፳፱, of the ወርኀ(Wärha – month) of Mïyázïya – ሚያዝያ.  In the Scriptures, what is also known as KéMōtū Be’Cḥʷalla – ከሞቱ በኋላ.  The Ethiopic calendar is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic, which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez-(ግእዝ)).

In this portion of the study of the Scriptures, after the death Aaron’s two sons (Nadab & Abihu), Moses is instructed by God to teach the children of Israel his ways for properly conducting themselves for the service of the Tabernacle.

This portion of the Scriptures deals with the rituals which have become what is known today as Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement); Ethiopically known as “Astesryo Q’en” among the Hebrew/Judaic faithful.  When Moses receives the laws and instruction for the practices to be conducted, he is instructed to “cast lots” upon two goats, for the children of Israel. One “lot” is to be cast for an offering to God & the other for a “scapegoat.”

The one goat that was be presented before God, for a sin offering.  The other goat was to be left alive, presented to God for an atonement & set free into the wilderness carrying the sins of the children of Israel away from the camp.  This ritual along with the other practices of the offerings/sacrifice were to be done in the Tabernacle (Mishkan[HB] – Dinkʷan[ET]), especially as a statute for Israel on the 10th day of the 7th (Tishrei תִּשְׁרִי) month.

other commandments, laws, and statutes were given to the children of Israel to follow to keep themselves set apart from the other people they might find themselves around.

So, in continuation of this double portion we move on to Kedôshïm – קְדֹשִׁים; From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known as Qídusán – ቅዱሳን.

Kedoshi’yim – Q’dusan; has a literal English translation of “the holy ones,” or “the saints.”

The study begins with GOD speaking to Moses, and the children of Israel, saying “make thyselves Holy for He, himself is Holy.”  God, intending to make the children of Israel, “up their game,” in one way or another, by slang terminology.  But, in a literal sense, God sought the children of Israel to turn from ways that hadn’t gotten them anywhere spiritually, physically, and mentally, as a group.  The children of Israel were to adhere to certain principles, laws, commandments, ordinances etc…..

The children of Israel were also given to more laws, commandments and statutes to live by, even while in the wilderness.  Also, the tilling and agricultural aspects of what the Hebrew people were to align their workings to was given to them by the words of God.  By Moses‘ teachings, given to him by God, the Hebrews were able to begin to formulate and sharpen skills needed to continue building the seed of the nation, which was promised to their predecessors; Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes to give perspective to the Ethiopic Tewahido-Orthodox, celebration of Fasika – ፋሲካ (which by transliteration and translation; corresponds directly to the Hebraic P(F)esach – פסח). In other circles of the Liturgical adherents to the Ethiopian Tewahido-Orthodox Church, the name for this observance, can also be called Be’äl Tinsæy – በዓል ትንሣኤ.  I refrain from using the Western Christendom adherance to the psuedo-equivalent, known as Easter; mainly because at the sheer core of the observance of Easter, stems from Greco-Roman Mythology(Eros, Easter Eggs, Easter Bunny, Greek Mythology etc.), and the origin of the celebration of Fasika, comes from the Hebraic Passover (Pesach/PesaKH‘= פֶּסַח) & Feast of Unleavened Bread (KH’ag/Chag HaMatz’ot – Chag ha-Matzot = חג המצה).

Fasika commemorates the Resurrection of CHRIST, though the exact day for celebration can be calculated from a perspective that is only slightly in contrast to the original calculation. Through and through, Fasika assuredly gives a better foundation in the surreal conclusion that is the life of CHRIST.

Fasika is an extremely climatic celebration, like the Roman Catholic Church fasting season(often called “Lent”), but predating it by hundreds of years, the Ethiopian Tewahido-Orthodox Church adherents go into a fasting, and prayer period consisting of about approx., 40-to-56 days. This important and soul-searching, period of time is known to the adherents as Hudâdæ – ሑዳዴ, or Abiy’ Ts’ome – ዓቢይ ጾመ.

[The Church, in her earliest days, recognized the necessity for her children to “chastise the body and bring it under subjection”, as St. Paul advises. The body is ever striving for mastery over the spirit; besides the external sources of temptation, “the world”, we have always another source with us which is a part of our nature. This is the reason for mortification. Self denial is in lawful things enables us to turn with great earnestness to spiritual things. It is on these grounds that the Ethiopian church has strictly adhered to the injunctions of the Didascalia and enjoyed on the faithful the longest and most austere fasts in the world. Fasting implies abstention from food and drink. Special days are appointed for fasting. Every Wednesday and Friday are days of fasting because on Wednesday the Jews held a council in which they rejected and condemned our Lord and on Friday they crucified him.]

The fasting of this particular, observance in the Tewahido Church-(Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church) are ordained by the Fetha Nägäst–  , or plainly translated to English as the “Law of the Kings.”

Ras Tafari Renaissance writes to give perspective to the Hebraic remembrance of the Passover. In modern Judaism, it is known by the Hebrew term as Pesach – פֶּסַח. Jewish traditions celebrate the liberation from slavery in Egypt approx., 3,300 yrs ago by God; during the time of the Pharaohs, and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of. But, from the Ethiopian-Hebraic perspective, the liberation came from within a spiritual, socio-political, and religious viewpoints between Northern Egypt (Lower Egypt) & Southern Egypt (Upper Egypt).

Now as the celebration of Pesach has come to a close for this year and the festival/feast of Unleavened Bread has begun, we here at RRR, seek to expound on the intricate details of the second celebration which extends the joyous event of Pesach;

the Feast of Unleavened Bread – የቂጣውን በዓል – חג המצות.

During the initiation of the Passover, the last plague (10th/tenth) placed upon the Egyptians and the Land of Egypt, the children of Israel the next morning were unable to fully prepare for the journey they were about to take through the wilderness; for they were thrust out Egypt for Pharaoh wanted nothing more to do with the Hebrews for the power of God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob had proven omnipotent.

[Exod. 11:29-33]


The Egyptians were urgent on getting the children of Israel, to leave the land of Egypt after the angel of death, sent by the God of the Hebrews to plague Egypt, of the all the firstborn of the land.

So, the Israelites took what they could of their own belongings, and the Egyptians lent to them what they didn’t have for fear of any plagues. But, when it came to the food that the children of Israel sought to take with them, the bread they had baked was without leaven so the dough had no time to rise for they sought to leave Egypt abruptly.

While, in route through the wilderness the children of Israel ate unleavened bread, until there was no more bread at all; as they did for the institution of the Passover Seder.

– notice the similarities in the (L) Ethiopian “Sahin” & the (R) Hebrew “Seder” plates.
