RSS#41 (ፊንሐስ / פִּינְחָס)

Greetings in the name of His & Her Imperial Majesties Qedamawi Haile Sellassie I & Itege Menen Asfaw,

This is another one of the many interpretations of the Scriptures from the light of Ras Tafari by, I, Lidj Yefdi (pronounced Lij, Yef-dee).

I assure you that if you are patient with me, come with a willing mind and heart(ready to learn), you will receive more than what you might have asked for, in seeking the perspective of a Ras Tafarian’s I-sight (eyesight) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, have come to seek insight) into the study of the Scriptures.  So, with this Hebrew Shabbat(or Sabbath day) if those who actually open up their Bibles to read in a Jewish/Hebrew cycle of readings, & thoroughly discern, nonetheless studied the Torah portion of Ph(F)ïncḥas פִּינְחָס, on the 18th – יח, & the 19th – יט, of the month of Tammuz – תמוז, in the year of 5780 (the Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon)  From an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation, where the current year is 2012/7512; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known, also as Feenḥas – ፊንሐስ, on the 3rd, & on the 4th – , of the month (ወርኀ) of Sänæy – ሰኔ.  The Ethiopic calendar, which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez – ግእዝ).

In this study, we continue in the accordance to the last portion.(Balak)  After what had become the Heresy of Baal-Peor, Phineas, the son of Eleazar, and the grandson of Aaron(Moses’ brother), lead in a moments notice, with zealot acts.

Pinchas ben-Eleazar (Phineas, the son of Eleazar; grandson of Aaron); ፊንሐስ ወልደ አልዓዛር/פינחס בן-אלעזר Tribe of Lew[v]i _ accredited to Mr. John L. Johnson‘s work, the Black Biblical Heritage.

Phineas, in which this parsha study is named, from the Hebrew and the Ethiopic Amharic, had slain a Midianitish woman, who’s name was Cozbi, and a Simeonite prince of Israel; who’s name was Zimri.   These two, along with many others partook in the turning away from God, in the sin of Baal-Peor.  Phineas, had stood up for Israel, turning God’s wrath away from them because of his zealous act and understanding of the covenant that was to be kept, between Israel & YHWH.

So, in a sense, because Phineas was willing to give his all to his God & for his people; seeing as how the Moabites and Midianites had conspired against Israel to bring them out of the favor of God; Phineas even went to the extent of going to war for God and them(children of Israel).  Phineas’ actions coupled with his faith as well, opened the door in which God gave a Covenant of Peace.  He and his those of his lineage would partake in it, continuing the Priesthood, among the lineage of Aaron(Moses’ brother).

Moses, was then instructed by God to take an account(census), for the second time, of the children of Israel, by family(or tribal lineage). [other census was taken in Numbers Chpt. 1: 1-16]

Because, of the waywardness of Israel’s faithfulness to God, their numbers dwindled and grew in spurts, while in the wilderness.  (ie. the Golden Calf, the Rebellion of Korah, and at this point; post- the Heresy of Baal-Peor…not forgetting the other instances withing Israel while in the wilderness)  So, Moses was instructed to take Eleazar, the High Priest(son of Aaron; father of Phineas), and number the children of Israel, once again, for God had said the because of the disobedience of this people, they should not enter into my rest.  But the children that would come after them would partake in the covenant, made the Abraham, Isaac & Jacob; albeit that those children of the generation of the Exodus from Egypt, would uphold the covenant and abide by the laws, commandments and statutes of God.

The children of Israel, were numbered by their tribal lineages, for the second time, by Moses and Eleazar; for God was preparing to bring the children of the Israelites, who made the Exodus from Egypt to the wilderness; into the Land that was Promised.

At this point, when the children of Israel, were receiving their plots and inheritances of the land, the Daughters of Zelophehad, came to Moses and the congregation in attempt to procure, the inheritance due to their father, who had passed & had no son pass his lineage to; for he(Zelophehad) had five daughters.  Usually, the children of Israel made it customary for the son to inherit the lot of his father’s.

Moses, in sincerity, took the Daughters of Zelophehad’s case to God, & God explained to Moses that though the children of Israel kept customary morals, the Daughters of Zelophehad had a very probable case.  God instructed to grant the daughters the plot that was to be allotted to their father, had he bear a son, whom would carry on his lineage among Israel.  From then on, it would not be a question whether or not a man bear a son to inherit his plot; because, the laws for possessing an inheritance from one parents among Israel, would not only come as a responsibility to the male children among Israel, but the responsibility would also come to the daughters, as well.

God then spoke to Moses, saying, go up to Mount Abarim, and see the land which will give to the children of Israel, to dwell.  Moses, could view the land from afar, but he couldn’t enter in, because of his disobedience at the waters of Meribah, in Kadesh(when Moses struck the ROCK); so Moses would be gathered to his people, along with the generation that wandered in the wilderness.

Moses, spoke to God, atop Mount Abarim, requesting that he appoint the children of Israel, another who would succeed him in leading the Israel into the Promised Land.

There God said to Moses, that Joshua, the son of Nun, should succeed him, in leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land.  Moses was to take Joshua, in front of Eleazar, the High Priest, and before the congregation of all the Hebrews to give him the charge & honour in the place of himself. On this Sabbath, we study where Moses and his brother Aaron, receive the ordinance of the law, in which God commanded them to take a “red heifer,” in the order for sacrifice/offering.  Instead of this offering being of the male of the first year, this one was to be of the female; also, she was not to be offered in the Tabernacle (Mishkan/Dinkʷan) but, to be offered outside of the camp, for her blood was to be sprinkled seven(7) times before the Tabernacle of the congregation, with the finger of Eleazar (Levite priest-son of Aaron).

The law for the death of a man in a tent, was also given to the children of Israel, in this portion of the Scriptures.  Seven(7) days shall the tent, any open vessel, which hath no covering, whosoever touched the one slain/deceased, in the open field, or the grave would be unclean.

Upon the trek of the children of Israel, when they had come to Kadesh-Barnea, Miriam the Prophetess, (Moses’ sister) was gathered to her people(passed to the spirit world)

As the journey in the wilderness continued, the children of Israel grew restless once again.  The congregation gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron.  They spoke ill off them, bringing them further into the wilderness to die of thirst, for there was no water.  Moses and Aaron went before the Tabernacle and fell on their faces(bowing in a plea to God).  God appeared to them, and spoke to Moses, instructing him to take his rod and gather the assembly of the children of Israel with Aaron.  Then he was to speak to the Rock, in front of the Hebrews and there water would come from the Rock; enough for the entire community of Israel.  Moses, along with Aaron gathered the people and brought them before the Rock, but in frustration with the constant murmuring and doubt of the children of Israel, instead of speaking to the Rock, Moses struck it with his rod, twice and water came from quenching the thirst of all the people and their cattle.

Because of Moses’ disobedience, and because he waxed hot (became angered with the children of Israel; allowing his frustration to interfere with the instruction given to him by God);  God told him that he would not bring the people into the land, which was promised to their forefathers.  & the waters, which came from the Rock in that place, because the children of Israel strove with God; would be called Meribah (which was to mean= quarrel, to strive, or provocation)

Moses then sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, requesting safe passage through the land of Edom, assuring that nothing would stolen and the Hebrews come not to quarrel with any of the inhabitants of the land.  But, Edom would not allow Israel to pass through the land.  Edom warned Israel that if Israel was to pass through Edom would come out with the sword.  Moses speaking for Israel, assured again the nothing would taken and if so, it would be recompensed but, Edom refused once again; and came out to divert Israel from their path.  Israel, then turned away from Edom and journeyed from Kadesh to Mount Hor.

{keep in mind: while going through this portion of the Scriptures lesson Edom” equated/represents “Esau,” who became known as Edom; (collectively/singular) & when the Scriptures speak of Israel,” even from a singular tone, it is speaking of the children of Israel/the Israelites.  Jacob’s, twin brother of Esau, would become known as “Israel” & father what would be known as the Twelve Tribes Of Israel.}

God, then spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor.  God said to them that Aaron (Moses’ brother), would be gathered to his people, and not enter into the land promised, to the children of Israel’s forefathers,for the rebellious actions at the waters of Meribah.  So upon Mount Hor, Aaron’s place as the Kahin HaGadol(High Priest) would pass along to his eldest son, Eleazar.  Moses was to take the garments and vestments of the High Priest and placed on and in the possession of his nephew, Eleazar.  Aaron then passes, leaving the Priesthood in the hands of son Eleazar, at Mount Hor.

A Canaanite king, whose name was Arad, heard word of the children of Israel making trek to Canaan and he went out to fight against them and took some of them prisoners.  Israel, made vow with God, that if those of the Canaanite king Arad, who took some of the Hebrews as prisoners, were delivered into their hands, they would utterly destroy their cities.  God heard them, and gave way to for them to keep their word, and it was made so, to the extent that the place where the king Arad, the Canaanite dominion was, would be called Hormah,for it was close to Mount Hor, where the passing of Aaron, was.

After the victory over Arad, the Canaanite king, the children of Israel journeyed from Mount Hor, by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom, and then the soul of the people grew weary, becoming discouraged.  Again, they spoke against Moses, moaning and groaning for food and water.  God sent fiery serpents, among the people and were bitten by them.  Many of the children of Israel died because of this, and turned to Moses, asking him to forgive them their doubt, and intercede with God for them.  Moses prayed for them and God instructed Moses, to make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole so that every one that looked upon it would live.  Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it on a pole and what God said, had come to pass.  Those that looked upon the Brazen Serpent lived,  in spite of being bitten by the other serpents.

The children of Israel set forward and then, making their journey East around Edom; (From Kadesh-through-Moab) until they came to Beer(pronounced Ba-e’yr) where they then were given water to drink from God.

Israel, sent messengers to Sihon the king of the Amorites, requesting permission safe passage through the land of the Amorites, in the same manner that Israel requested of Arad, whom was a Canaanite king.  Israel would not take anything that was not their own and would not quarrel with any of the inhabitants of the land of the Amorites.  Sihon, wouldn’t let Israel pass through either, and gathered all his people together, to go out against Israel.  At Jahaz,the Amorites fought against Israel; Israel smote the Amorites with sword and then, possessed the lands from Arnon-to-Jabbok, even to the borders of the children of Ammon.

While Israel, dwelt in the land conquered of the Amorites, they also drove out the Amorites in Jaazer.  The children of Israel then, went north, and Og, the king of Bashan, cam out against them but, God told Moses “…to fear him not…,” for he to would be delivered into his hand.  There Israel, smote them and possessed the land there, as well.  Wherein, at that point, the children of Israel pitched camp in the plains of Moab, on the side of Jordan(river), near Jericho.

As we go forward in our studies, this Sabbath study, Israel after conquest had grown strong in the plain of Moab.  A king of Moab, who’s name was Balak, had seen what the children of Israel did to their adversaries in the habitations that were adjacent to his dominion.

King Balak, then sent messengers to a known “sorcerer“, or man of secret knowledge, whom wasn’t an Israelite; his name was called BalaamBalak devised a plan to have the children of Israel cursed; for they grew strong, the king and the people of Moab feared Israel.   So, it seemed to Balak, that if somehow he could have the children of Israel diverted from their focus then, they could be defeated and driven out of the lands, which they had now possessed.

The elders of Moab, along with the elders of Midian, together plotted against the children of Israel.  As messengers of Balak, the king of Moab, willing to compensate, for this endeavor, they went to Balaam, in a place called Pethor to present the words of Balak.

So, Balaam’s take is cordial with the king of Moab’s messengers & he welcomes them to stay the night, while he utilizes some time, to deliberate with God, whether the children of Israel could be cursed, & how to go about doing so.  God(YHWH), comes to Balaam, in a dream, and speaks with him about the men, who have come to him, & for what purpose.  Balaam says to God, that the men are of, Balak-king of Moab, and they sought him to curse the children of Israel.  After consultation with God, Balaam is not permitted to curse the children of Israel, nor to go with the messengers of Balak to Moab.  The next morning, Balaam tells the messengers that he cannot curse Israel nor go with them to the king; for God refused.  The messengers returned to Moab, and told the king, Balak, the news and the reasoning thereof.

But, Balak was persistent of Balaam to grant his request, so Balak sent others nobles of his influence to further persuade Balaam to Moab.  Balak offered Balaam, honour of distinction within his kingdom, but Balaam refused a second time; not budging a inch,  unwilling to incline his ear to the possible gifts of gold & silver, in abundance.

“…If Balak would give me his house

full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond

the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more…”

[Numb. 22: 18]

Though, with his mind already made up about the situation, which Balak was in high pursuit of, Balaam gives a place to rest for the messengers sent by Balak, for a second night.  In that night, God spoke with Balaam once more saying; if the men of Balak call for you to travel with them, go with them to Balak in Moab.  But, Balaam rose up in the morning and just went with the messengers of Balak, more than likely with no intent giving reverence to the words God spoke; mainly because God’s anger was then kindled against Balaam.  So, while Balaam was on the way to Moab, riding on his donkey, an angel of God appeared in their way, holding a sword-in-hand, standing as an adversary; but only the donkey’s eyes were open to see.  The donkey turned aside, out of the way, into a field, & Balaam smote the donkey in attempt to force the donkey to obey his command.  Balaam mounted the donkey again, and continued along the way, but, in the field there was a vineyard with a two walls on each side.  The angel appeared a second time; with the donkey’s eyes being the only one to see again, so the donkey threw itself towards one wall, crushing Balaam‘s foot into it.  Balaam, smote the donkey a second time.  The angel, then went further on the road and stood, this time in a narrow place where there was no place to turn, to the left or right.  This time seeing the angel, the donkey fell down under Balaam, angering him to smite the donkey a third time with a staff.  At this point, God gave speech to the donkey; and the donkey ask Balaam, why had it been struck three times, along the road.  Balaam answering the donkey said, gave reason because the donkey would not yield to his command, also mentioning that if he had a sword, he would’ve killed the donkey.

But, the donkey spoke once more saying, that was it not the same donkey which Balaam always had ridden; and had there ever been another day where the donkey acted in the manner that it did on this day.  Balaam answered no.  Then God opened Balaam‘s eyes to see the angel, as well; Balaam bowed down falling on his face.  Then the angel explained why the appearances were made and had not the donkey turned off the road those three times, Balaam would have been slain.

After Balaam‘s encounter on the road to Moab, he comes to Balak, but Balak, unknowing of whether his request had been answered officially or not, Balak lets Balaam know that he is not prepared to fulfill the giving of a honorable title or position that was previously promised to him, since he does not know if Balaam had come to Moab, to acknowledge the request of cursing Israel or not.  Balaam goes through the process of seemingly preparing to curse Israel, but, again an inquiry must be made to God(even of his{Balaam’s} psuedo-sorceric powers); this time with the words of God coming to Balak through Balaam.

Balaam has Balak set up seven altars upon a place called Kirjath-Huzoth.  There atop that high place overlooking the children of Israel, Balak did as Balaam said, in setting up seven altars.  The seven altars  had a bullock and a ram on each, as offerings & while Balak awaited an answer from Balaam; Balaam inquired of God what was next. God met Balaam, and Balaam told God that the seven altars were in place with their offerings.  God then told Balaam to return to Balak & he shall speak.  Balaam returned to Balak & then God’s words came through Balaam.

whom the LORD hath not defied?…”

Balak, the king of Moab, unsatisfied with the results atop Kirjath-huzoth, pleaded with Balaam to attempt again to curse Israel from another vantage point.  So, he brought Balaam to the field of Zophīm(atop Pisgah)
built the seven altars again, and put the offerings in place.  There he awaited a second answer from Balaam.  Balaam, spoke again to God, & God told him to return to him again & the words would be put in his mouth.

(The Hebrew Calendar corresponds to a Lunar cycle of the Moon) but, from an Ethiopic-Christian perspective and calculation in the year of 2012/7512 E.C.; these readings from the Scriptures would align to what is known as Lǎk Tĭlkalach’hu – ላክ ትልካላችሁ, on the 12th – ፲፪, & on the 13th – ፲፫, of the month (ወርኀ) of Sänæy – ሰኔ.  The Ethiopic calendar, which is solar (with its correspondence to the Sun) aligns to this Sabbath (or Senbet – ሰንበት) in the Ethiopian language of Amharic which is currently one of the languages of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (the other language being Ge’ez – ግእዝ).

In continuation from the last study-portion; (MeSeder HaElohim [מסדר האלוהים] “in the Order of God/JAH/YAH“) we come to the 13th chapter of the kifil-ክፍል (portion), of Shelach’ Lecha’ [שְׁלַח-לְךָ]  In the Book of Numbers, this 37th parsha-kifil, Moses is now instructed by God to send the chosen Princes of Israel to search/spy/scout the land (Canaan), which God had promised to the children of Israel.

The spies or scouts were to instructed to go the south mountain *[note: to be discussed (TBD)], to see the land (how it looked/upon view), see what people dwelt there, & if the people there were strong or weak, if there were few or many. They were also instructed to see if the land be a good land, what cities in the land were inhabited, and if those cities (inhabited) were “strongly held.”  They were to be “of good courage” and bring fruits of the land to prove that it had been seen, for it was the due season of the “first-fruits.”

*TBD= Ras Tafari Renaissance, comes to a note that could be interpreted, for futher study.  Numbers chapter 13, verse 17; gives instruction by Moses(whom received it from God) to the men, who were scout the land of Canaan, to “Get you up this way, southward and go up to the mountain.” Ras Tafari Renaissance “dibbled & dabbled,” interacting more with the Hebrew Bible(תּוֹרָה), studying the Scriptures from the Hebrew origin{language} & come to the word Negeb(v)-נֶּגֶב ; when the Scripture speaks of the mountain southward, which the men sent by Moses were to see the land.  The Negeb(v) desert of southern modern Israel is indeed mountainous.*

The scouts took up the fruits of the land, as instructed, at the Brook of Eshol.  They took the cluster of grapes, pomegranates, and figs; then they returned to the wilderness where Israel was encamped & gave their reports of the land (which they stayed 40 days) from their searching.

Caleb brought a good report to Moses, Aaron, and those of the congregation that heard him.  Even, so much so that Caleb said, “…Let us go up at once, and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it…”[Numb. 13: 30]  But, the men that went with him brought a evil/bad report (evil-because it was wrapped in lies tied to some of the truth); “…the land eat(eth) up the inhabitants…, [all the people were of great stature]…”

At the sounds of the ten evil/bad reports of the scouts, who came to give their assessment on the land which was promised to the Hebrews; the children of Israel wept and began to murmur against Moses and Aaron, for they saw the ten evil/bad reports as truth, also that God had brought them out of Egypt and into the wilderness to die.  The children of Israel had planted seeds in their own minds from the bad reports that their wives and their children, would become prey, as they fell by the sword.  They even saw it may have been better to return to Egypt.  So much so, that they spoke to each other to make a captain that would campaign to take them back to Egypt.

Moses and Aaron, then fell on their face before the congregation of Hebrews, for they could not comprehend why the children of Israel, would go as far to think, the things they were thinking.  Then Joshua and Caleb, told the truth about the report on the scouting of the land, the people (the Amorites, Jebusites, & Hittites resided in the mountains: the Amalekites to the south: & also the Canaanites resided near the sea and the coast of the Jordan [river].

Then, God became angered with Israel because of their weak faith and murmuring; for their provoking, he sought to destroy them

Moses then, interceded for the children of Israel and because of his pleading words to God, their lives were spared.  But, God would not allow them to enter into the Land of Promise.  Forty years, in the wilderness, would their children wander bearing the whoredoms of their parents.

The laws and statues, rules and regulations for the offerings/sacrifices that were to be administered upon entry into the land that was promised, were reiterated to the children of Israel.

God then spoke to Moses, telling him to instruct the children of Israel to make fringes upon the borders of their garments; the fringes were also to have a ribband of blue.  These fringes, with the ribband of blue were for the children of Israel to keep throughout their generations.  The fringes were to be a reminder of the commandments of God, and that they should observe them and do(keep) them.  The Israelites were to look[observe]upon the fringes, and keep[do] the commandments of God; to not seek after their own hearts and eyes, which would take them ‘a whoring’ away.

Now, for in summation of the study we have in front of us; In this portion of the study of the Scriptures, Jethro(Yitro in Hebrew; Yotor in Amharic), Moses’ father-in-law, hears the all that has happened in Egypt. The miracles of Israel’s departure from Egypt, GOD’s guidance through the wilderness, & his help in the defeat of the enemies of the children of Israel.

Now, the children of Israel have sojourned to the dwelling of Moses’ wife(Ts’pporah) and father-in-law’s, land in Midian & pitched camp. Jethro, then advises Moses on structuring the command of the children of Israel into a sort of order of civil officers, after bringing his wife and two sons(Gershom; who’s name has the meaning of “I have been an foreigner in a strange land,” & Eliazar; who’s name has the meaning of, “the GOD of my father, is mine help & delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”) from Midian to the wilderness.

Jethro, then entreats the GOD of Israel, sighting him as greater then all gods. Then Jethro took a burnt offering and sacrificed to the GOD of Israel, & broke bread with Moses, Aaron, & all the elders of Israel.

Moses, takes heed to his father-in-law’s words, & assembles all the tribes of Israel and appoints heads over them.  These heads(of the tribes) would discern small matters and only bring matters that were of great concern to Moses, to not wear heavy on him, burdens of an entire nation.

Whenever GOD came to speak to Moses, to lay out instructions for Israel to follow, GOD came in a cloud of fire upon the Mount in Sinai. In discontent, and the words of some of the attendants in the Egyptian court, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened [by God], so Pharaoh summoned for 600 of his first choice of chariots, along with all the chariots of Egypt, with the captains of them & was in “hot-pursuit” of returning the children of Israel back to Egypt (& back to servitude).  Fearful of the pursuit of the chariots of Egypt, the children of Israel, cried out to God, & turn to Moses, in disbelief of the happenings in front of them. Moses, then commands them to fear not, for the God of Israel will do battle for them.  They are to continue to walk by faith &, to remember the ideal to do good works.

Moses, was then commanded by God to stretch forth his rod, & God split the Sea of Reeds(Red Sea), and the children of Israel traveled through on dry land. Whereas, the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart drove him to pursue the Israelites/Hebrews into the sea; they were swallowed up by it.  The children of Israel had the words of Moses fulfilled right before their eyes; God would do battle for them, if they stayed in the way of his light, keep his laws, statutes, and commandments; the Egyptians which they saw, they would never see again, & they would know the YHWH EloHIM is GOD.

The Hebrews, led by Moses, went on to the wilderness of Sin, where they murmured against Moses again.  Moses was commanded by God, to take his rod in his hand, to the rock near Horeb, for he would bring water out of it to drink.   Moses, called the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the Israelites.

Then, came out the Amalekites, to make war with the children of Israel.  Moses, told Joshua, to gather those out of the Hebrews who could go to war with them.  Joshua went and chose, between them, & Moses, Aaron, and Hur, went up to a hilltop.

They began to see that as Moses , raised his hands the Israelites prevailed & once his hands dropped they fell by the sword.  The Israelites prevailed for Hur(Chur), and Moses’ brother Aaron, held his hands high.  Moses, afterwards erected a altar, and called it Jehovah-Nissi’(ይህዌህ ንሲ-יְהוָה נִסִּי)-[Ex. 17: 15]. God then, said that the war between Israel & Amalek would last from generation-to-generation.

This portion our study of the Scriptures, deals with the three (3) remaining plagues of Egypt.  

The children of Israel are instructed by God to compose their calendar (or simply a “time keep-sake”) by the phases of the moon, which leads to the creation of the lunar Hebrew calendar.  During the plagues, a memorial for the Hebrews to keep yearly, is instituted.  This memorial would become a statute of those who perform the practical applications of the Hebrew faith; for example, the keeping of the Sabbath, but the time-keeping (months-years) in an annual sense.

God tells Moses and Aaron, and to go to Pharaoh, knowing that his heart was hardened but the signs and wonders of God, were to come upon Egypt.  The children of Israel were to tell the their children and the many generations to come, of the signs, of YHWH.

Pharaoh’s heart, being hardened once more, he continued his refusal of letting go the children of Israel.  God told Moses, to stretch his hands toward the heavens so that it would be darkness to fall upon the land of Egypt.(three days)  When the darkness covered Egypt, Pharaoh pleaded with Moses to make sacrifice to YHWH, bring light upon Egypt.

God then, told Moses that there would still be yet, one more plague that would be placed upon Egypt.  For afterwards this plague the children of Israel, would come out of Egypt.  Moses was to tell the people, to prepare to exit Egypt, shortly, and to borrow of their neighbors jewels of silver and gold; even so to the point that they received favor in the sight of the Egyptians because of the sign and wonders, that they were able to take of them as well.  But yet, every firstborn of Egypt would be taken away, even that of the Pharaoh’s house.  This would be the 10th and final plague.

Now, the children of Israel had come into Egypt under Joseph, & buried Jacob(Israel) in the land of Canaan.  Wherefore, the children of Israel grew exceedingly in Egypt.  But, as time past there came a Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, & sought to dealt wisely with the Hebrews, for there was worry of the great numbers the children of Israel grew to.  But, taking matters further, the Pharaoh that did not know Joseph, found it beneficial to serve the Hebrews with work of rigor.

Even, taking matters to another step, there was a decree made by Pharaoh, to have any male child of the children of Israel slain.  This charge was given to two Hebrew midwivesShiphrah & Puah.

These two Hebrew women, did not follow the orders the Pharaoh, for they feared the judgement of God, more than he.  So, Israel continued to grow in number.  Pharaoh determined, charged his people to take matters more seriously.  In the midst of this, out of the house of Levi, was born a male-child, at three months was sent up a river, in attempt to save his life, by his mother.

This child was found at the hand of the daughter of the Pharaoh, whom knew of the decree for the Hebrew male children, & noticed the this child was one of the them, wrapped the clothing of their arrangements, and a small ark of bulrushes.  The daughter of the Pharaoh, took him and had him nursed by the Hebrew woman, who sent him up the river.

The child grew in favor of the Egyptians, but things began to change in his life, as he learned more about himself.  The child had been named Moses by the daughter of the Pharaoh, for she drew him from the waters.  He went out one day, among the Hebrews & saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, enraged by the burdens which the children of Israel had to endure, he in sudden moment slew the Egyptian & hid him in the sand.  Days past, & then Moses saw two Hebrew at each others throats, in argument, Moses intervened & tried to find common ground between the two.

But, one who clearly had been found at fault the argument, confronted Moses, and rejected him for he knew of Moses interaction between the Hebrew & the Egyptian he had slain, in secret.  Moses, for fear, fled to Midian, where he would later meet Reu’el(Jethro); a man who raised seven daughters.  The seven daughters, were whom Moses would meet first, for they came to a well to draw water for the flocks they attended for their father.  The seven daughters of Reu’el(Jethro), were being harassed by some other shepherds & Moses again, intervened driving them away, along with helping them water their flocks.

The daughters came to tell their father of what happened to the mat the well, & they described Moses as an Egyptian, for he still carried a few things which he left with, but Reu’el, knew that of the times, it would be odd for an Egyptian to help a Midianite.  Reu’el(Jethro), invited Moses to stay a while in Midian.  Before long Moses felt love one Reu’el’s  daughters & her name was Ts’ipporah – ሲፓራ / צִּפּוֹרָה.

The cry of the children of Israel became great, so great they even sought a deliverer, from prophecies.  Moses, now attended the flocks of Reu’el(Jethro), but the voice of God was about to call upon him.

This portion of our studies in the Scriptures, will conclude the first of Book of Genesis.  While continuing study in the last Torah portion of Genesis the study deals with Jacob‘s(Israel) tenure in Egypt.  Jacob(Israel), felt that the time drew near to his death, so he spoke to his son, Joseph; telling him of an obligation he would like his son to fulfill.

Jacob(Israel) desired to be laid to rest among his ancestors in the land of Canaan, which God has promised that his descendants would inherit.

  Jacob(Israel), told his two grandsons [Manasseh & Ephraim] to come closer for he would bless them according to the covenant he received from God and his ancestors: Abraham & Isaac.  Oddly, Jacob(Israel), blessed Ephraim, the younger son, in the place of the elder sonManasseh.  Even, after the attempts of Joseph, who noticed that his father blessed his younger son in the place of his eldest and vice-versa.

Jacob(Israel), then died in Egypt & Joseph, made preparations for his body & burial, but more importantly the fulfillment of his oath to his father.  Because Joseph, was such a great man of stature in Egypt, the passing of his father was a grievous thing among the Egyptians.*  This was so much so, that when Joseph, went to Pharaoh and told him of the oath that his father wished him to fulfill, Pharaoh allowed it, even allowing many of the elders of the house, and of the land, along with servants of the house to go with him to Canaan.  But, upon arrival into the land of Canaan, the Canaanites saw the people that brought up Jacob(Israel), from Egypt, & they saw them mourning at Atad….& said “this is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.”*  This day brought about the name of “Abel Mitz’raim – אָבֵל מִצרַיִם,” which translates to the “Meadow of Egypt“, or the “Mourning of Egypt.“  All in the procession for the remembrance of the passing of Jacob. [the Patriarch of Israel]

Joseph’s brothers, thought surely after their father’s passing that Joseph would in one way or another return the favor for their jealousy of him from their past.  But Joseph did no such thing, but returned to Egypt & witnessed the birth of his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren until his Joseph’s passing in Egypt.  Joseph also made oath with the all of Israelites; that they should bring his bones out of Egypt & lay him to rest with his ancestors in the land of Canaan. The last portion of study shows Judah, pleading on the behalf of his younger brother, Benjamin.  Judah explained to Joseph, the affinity that Jacob(Israel) had to Benjamin.  He continued to elaborate on those reasons showing that it was because of Joseph’s supposed disappearance that Jacob(Israel) was very “overprotective” (so, to speak) and cautious of Benjamin’s well-being.  Joseph, cunningly made arrangements of his own, to have his family in the land of Canaan, to come to Egypt.  For Joseph knew not at first, if his father Jacob(Israel), was even alive or not; but upon speaking with his brother & going unnoticed by him (& the other nine[9] as well), he knew that he was now, alive & well of old age.

But, going on in speech with his brother Judah, Joseph couldn’t hold back his emotion at hearing about the plight of his kindred during the famine.  Joseph, then revealed who he really was, wept and embraced his brothers.  Forgiving them, for their past encounters, & revealing to them how their families, flocks and possessions would now find a home in Egypt, for the famine so great.  So Joseph, pleaded with Pharaoh to allow his kindred to relocate.

Jacob(Israel) upon hearing that his son Joseph, was indeed alive, with his youngest son, Benjamin.  He rejoiced, but was reluctant to venture into Egypt to dwell.  But, God came to him in a vision and gave him the encouragement to see his son, & that his posterity in the covenant that Israel had with God; from Abraham & Isaac would be preserved.  So, the Hebrews ventured into Egypt by the workings of Joseph, and the blessing of Pharaoh. (But, more definitively by the hands of God.)

Joseph, gathered his family and his kindred into the land of Goshen, for they had flocks, cattle and he coached them into telling Pharaoh that they were shepherds.

Joseph, managed the house of Pharaoh in Egypt well for he was a governor & because of the famine many came to buy food from Joseph.  He stored the grains and seeds of the land in plenty, & many came to barter to feed themselves and their families, in exchange for others things.

The last portion ended with Joseph, the son of Jacob(Israel), being sold by his own brothers, & through trials of times, Joseph found himself in Egypt.  As a prisoner in Egypt, he is still blessed by God grace.

Joseph, now in the company of other prisoners, (ie. the chief baker, and butler), interprets visions they’ve had.  The news of the gift that Joseph has, reaches the ears of the Pharaoh, & Pharaoh, inquires of Joseph assistance for a vision he cannot make sense of.

Pharaoh, summoned all of the magicians, of Egypt to interpret the dream troubling dreams he had been having.  But, surely, there was none of them who could interpret the dreams for him.  So, upon hearing about an Hebrew, in the dungeon, who seemingly interpreted dreams in accuracy, of other prisoners and others, Pharaoh, called for Joseph’s release; for he wished to see if Joseph could give an interpretation of his dreams.

Joseph, then was set in high regard to Pharaoh, by his command because he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream with such great understanding.  Pharoah called Joseph, Tz’aphnat Paneah’kh – צָפְנַת פַּעְנֵחַ, & he was given Asnath – אָסְנַת, the daughter of Potipherah, the priest of OnAsnath, bore Joseph, two sons, which he called Manasseh & Ephraim.  Because of Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream, many nations came to Egypt to buy food, for Joseph had stored for the years of famine that was great upon the land.  Jacob(Israel) sent his sons, all but the youngest, Benjamin, for he feared that something may happen equivalent to Joseph’s disappearance.

The sons of Israel, went into Egypt to buy things like grain, for the famine had left them with very little.  Joseph, saw his brethren, but they were unable to notice him for he was dressed in the apparel of Egyptian nobility.  There he confronted them as if, he were dealing with spies & commanded that they send their youngest brother along with them for Joseph had not seen Benjamin, with the others.  The brothers returned and told Jacob(Israel) what happened while they were in Egypt.  Judah, one of the brethren spoke firmly with Joseph, and their father Jacob(Israel), in the matter of their youngest brother, Benjamin.

Upon the return of all his brothers, with their youngest brother, Benjamin; Joseph made haste to see all of them together again.  Joseph, appealed to Pharaoh to bring his family to Egypt, for the famine was so great & he wished not to see his family struggle in the land of Canaan; Pharaoh permitted the Hebrews to enter in, on Joseph’s behalf.
